I'm "expanding" - January 25th 2009, 09:59 AM

A few weeks ago, I went shopping with my sisters, grandma, and mom. I mostly wear smalls. I showed my mom a hoodie I liked, and it was a small. She told me I'd better get a medium because my shirts are getting too tight because I'm expanding. I walked away from her. I told my sister that I think she just told me I was getting fat. My mom comes over and says she didn't say I was getting fat. I've always been a twig, now I am becoming a stick. Sure. I don't think she knows how much that hurt my feelings. I have always compared myself with others and have never felt thin enough. I'm 4'11 and weigh --- pounds so I know I'm not really fat. But my stomach isn't flat either. Everytime I found something I liked she told me to get a bigger size. Then starts telling me it's just my boobs that are getting bigger and I need a bigger size for that. I was getting over being self conscious with this, but now it's back worse than before. Thanks....

Hi there,

I think if you are feeling bad about this, then you should talk to your mom. She needs to know that what she is saying is hurting your feelings. You two could probably work out a way to fix it.

As for insecurities about weight, a lot of people have them. But weights change all the time, so don't worry too much about it. You shouldn't feel bad about changing. As long as you are comfortable, then that's all that matters.

If talking to your mom doesn't work, then just try things on for yourself and choose what is comfortable. You're old enough to make decisions about your clothes by yourself.

The great artists of our time are the ones who created something timeless. But it was never them defining it that way.
Everyone has a story. What's yours?
