Labels? - November 15th 2009, 10:17 PM

Ok, so I consider myself a nerd haha. Plain and simple. But, I mean it as a good way, like I'm a huge gamer. And I don't look like a nerd, which surprises people I meet when I tell them I basically am.

But the downside is that their whole opinion changes on me with that one little statement. I say I'm a nerd because I'm proud of it. It's who I am. but even though I really fit in with the "preps" I'm still judged for what I have said. Is this right? Should I go around saying this? And has this happened to anyone else, you know, fitting in but being yourself and changing everyone's opinion?

I'm a stoner, as bad as it sounds.
But I'm not your stereotypical stoner, if anything i'd say im a computer/RPG nerd who smokes weed.
Like, I love any computer games, and i play RPGS alot (videogame and table top sometimes).
My hair is pretty long, I guess you could say i look like a skater? I kind of dress like a skate would.

Hi Sam,

Labels only have negative connotations when you let them. There is nothing wrong at all about being a 'nerd' or liking video games. I think that you should be allowed to call yourself whatever you want, and likewise you should be allowed to not label yourself.

People may think that you calling yourself a nerd is like you putting yourself down. They may think of the 'nerd' label as something bad and are surprised that you are calling yourself that. Or they could just be surprised. The nerds depicted on television or in books is probably what they think right away when hearing the label, but not what they think when they see you. It may be changing a perspective that they don't really want to change.

I think you should go around saying what you want. Calling yourself a nerd is not hurting anyone, and it does not change who you are. I think more people need to learn that nerds are cool

Take care.

The great artists of our time are the ones who created something timeless. But it was never them defining it that way.
Everyone has a story. What's yours?

Lables are wrong period. Nobody in the world should have a lable put on them even if you do it yourself. It only hurts people and makes them feel bad and makes them feel like they can only hang out with the group they got "labled" with. I just think you shouldn't lable yourself at all or tell anyone what lable you think you are. Thats just my opionion.

I don't have much to say on this, except this quote:

"Labels are meant for soup cans!"

I honestly don't fit it any label group, period. There are times when I act emo, but I dress preppy, and I care about grades a lot (just have a lack of motivation...) meaning that I would be a nerd. And I play video games too. It's impossible to classify me, and I couldn't be happier about that!

people will always find a reason to judge u but if ur proud about who u r then there opinions dont mean shit. u define ur own life, dont let others make u think anything else
