My friends always make fun of touchy subjects.. - January 7th 2010, 02:32 AM

Okay, so my friends always make fun of me, saying they think like something's wrong with me(mostly bipolar disorder, ocd, drugs, alcohol, cutting, depression, and a few other things.) and like it seems like they bring up a lot of the disorders/addictions that me or my really close family members have or have been through and like, I'm really affraid of like inheriting them.. and I know I will try harder then possible then getting into those addictive behaviors, so it really makes me feel like crap when they say that. I don't know what to say to them to get my friends to stop, but I don't want to tell them all of my family buisness, because it's really personal. Ya know? So yeah... any advice?

Just tell them that you find conversations on that topic offensive of uncomfortable... you don't have to say why. If they're good friends, I think they'll stop doing it in front of you.

Ask them if they could talk about something else, you know people struggling with the things they are talking about and it's a little discomforting. If you're honest like that, you're not revealing anything personal, just that you know people who are having a hard time with it. They should understand and try to avoid talking about it, maybe you should tell them that it's not something to laugh about, if they were in that situation themselves they wouldn't find it at all fun. Be honest with them, it's the only way they will understand, also, be firm, but gentle with your words, if they feel like your accusing them it will cause tension.
They're your friends, they are the ones who will be there for you through thick and thin, and if they get offended so easily by an objection to their making fun of sensitive matters, then they need to open their eyes. Many would frown upon such an attitude to addiction, etc.

You could just say "can you please stop joking about these topics they aren't funny and I would appreciate it if we didnt talk about it" and just leave it at that, they dont need to know why, if they want to know why...well they will just have to wonder. Its understandable that you feel uncomfortable, and they should respect that.

talk to your friends about your feelings and if they don't stop making fun of you then i suggest you stop hanging out with them because they don't deserve to be your friends
