Best friend? - June 6th 2010, 11:21 PM

i had this friend called "Liam". We've been best friends all our lives. I've known him since I was 3 years old. We liked the same shows, same music, we were in the same classes. So we talked in the playground, helped each other in class, helped each other with prep over msn, then played Warcraft together. We were such great friends...
Now all he does is basically exercise. It's like he's lost all interests.. his daily routine is wake up at 6:30, organic musli with protein shake. School. Home, exercise. Homework. Bit more exercise. Maybe listen to some music.
It's like we've lost all common interests. I've drifted towards artsy and computer things, but he's just so smart it's crazy, and he's always overshadowed me, which I found a bit offputting. But nowadays, it's like.. he gets all the girls, and I don't get it! And at the same time, he doesn't. They're always like "Tense your muscles "Liam!" and at the same time, all my 'girlfriends' say he's undateable, because he's uninteresting.
I talk to him, tell him to do other stuff, and get some more interests, but he just keeps telling me "How is exercise unhealthy?" and I sort of stand there with no response

So is it worth staying friends, after we've had such great experiences etc. together? I mean, I know some friendships do drift apart, and that's what happens sometimes, but is there any hope of salvaging this?

It sounds like he's just turing into a health freak or exersize queen.
It sounds like Liam might have some body issues with himself.
Just try talking to him & letting him know that your feeling like your drifting.
I think you should still salvage your friendship with him.

Can't you two still be friends even though you're developing new interests?
Assuming that you're in your teens, I'd say that it's perfectly normal for you two to develop new interests and find hobbies that might not be similar since you two are continuing to discover your identities. I have friends that like to work out. They even joke that I'll be a professional female body builder in ten years (I'm just a runner :p) It might be hard to find common interests and similarities in your friends sometimes, but he is still the same person you've grown up with and love, no? You should try and accept him and whatever his interests are if you are still interested in maintaining your friendship with him. We all search for our own niches, perhaps this is just what he feels best doing. :)
