Unfortunately there's not a whole lot you can do if they won't tell you what is wrong. You don't want them to feel pressured to tell you, but at the same time you want them to know that they are always welcome to talk to you about their problems when they need a friend. If I were in your situation I would focus on making sure my friend knew that I would always be there for them. Just tell him/her that you know that they're struggling, and they never need to feel obligated to let you know why, but that you are always there if they ever need to talk things through. Sometimes just knowing someone is there for you and that they care about you is a lot of help in itself.
