Exclamation How can I convince my mom to help me? - October 15th 2010, 01:44 AM

So I have been struggling with depression for a few years now. It got a lot better last year because I was in an amazing relationship with a guy I really liked. Well we broke up a couple months ago and now the depression is back. With it comes insomnia and I lose my appetite. I was sexually abused by a guy (not my ex) and that lasted for a good 8 months.

I have been dropping hints to my mother about how I need help. She says shes here if I want to talk to her, but all my problems seem like nothing to her. I actually got the courage to tell her I was abused at the time, and she didn't believe me. Recently I've even asked her if I could start seeing a therapist. No luck. How can I really explain to her that I need help?

Hey there Nicole,

It's great that your reaching out and asking for help. It's a great first step that you have taken and you should be really proud of yourself for being able to do that. Is there anything that you like to do that makes you happy? Something that gets your mind off the bad things? If you have any hobbies i would try that. Go hang out with your friends, to get your mind off it.. that can help a lot.

As far as your Mom, tell her straight up that you need help. If she doesn't believe you, there should be someone trusting that you can talk to- to get the help you need. Does your school have a counselor- If you do, telling them might be the right thing to do, to get you the help you need and deserve. I want to tell you what a great job you are doing, trying to get your mom's attention to tell her you need help. It takes a lot to be strong enough to do that. Things won't always be this hard in life. It WILL get better. Your strong and capable of so much, remember that.

I'm always here if you want to talk dear. My PM box is always open.
