i think my mom is reading my emails - November 15th 2010, 11:39 PM

i know that my mom created my email account for me when i was like 5 or somethin. i have a yahoo, but i can't figure out how to change the password (or maybe she still has parental controls on the account). anyway, she's always hinting to me about offensive emails getting out. i know that i might have written some crap about other people, swore, or said mildly innapropriate stuff, but i really dont want her reading my private stuff, like after i emailed my friend about who i liked, she started bugging me about boys and all.... what should i do?

You have two options: Change your password for yahoo click "Account Info" and then "Update password-reset info". Or you can get a new e-mail account and tell your friends you are changing e-mail.
Good Luck.!

It might be worth it for you to change your email account. Perhaps try Gmail?

It's not alright for your mother to be going through your private emails. Unless you have done something incredibly terrible which warrants her needing to sift through your personal life for your own safety, then she is in the wrong.

If you don't want to change your password or email service provider, you could save a draft in your emails, and inside it have a letter to your mother explicitly requesting she stay out of your personal life?

I'm not sure if this is true, but when I made an AIM screen-name recently, it gave me an email along with the screen-name without a prompt for a secondary email address (like, where to send lost passwords and stuff). But I think you should try getting to the root of your problem, and actually sitting down and talking to your mom about privacy. You could try to work out some sort of agreement.

For instance, I have a password only I know to my user account on the computer, but my mum is allowed to look at whatever I'm doing online at any given time to make sure I'm staying safe.

’Twas brillig, and the slithy toves
Did gyre and gimble in the wabe;
All mimsy were the borogoves,
And the [mome raths] outgrabe.

In this case, I think it would be best for you to create a new g-mail account. Gmails are the new fad these days. It's also very easy to use. Just tell your friends that you're getting a new e-mail address. I don't know how old you are, but if you're in your teenage years, your mom shouldn't be reading your e-mails. However, she does have a reason to be concerned about your attitude towards others. Take her concern to heart at least, if you're going to get anything out of this.

Just make a new email account and don't tell her about it, then she can't even try and make you tell her your password.
