Family is falling apart - April 3rd 2011, 04:55 PM

On my dads side--My uncle is in jail due to burglary and substance abuse. My aunt is divorcing him
My mom side--My uncle is getting a nasty divorce with his wife. My other uncle isnt speaking to any member of my family because he's mad at my grandma about something.
My sister is away at college and is extremely homesick. She wants to come home now. Shes over 12 hours away.
This is putting a giant strain on my family. My dad is constantly mad and tense. Last night I called him to ask if he wanted anything and he yelled at me and hung up.
I dont know what to even do or say. Becuase there isnt anything

“You've changed so much. I guess that's what happens. I wish you knew how much you changed me. I wonder if I changed you, if your life is different because of me. Because mine's different. My God, you taught me so much, and now we don't even talk to each other. I guess that's what happens.”

Give it some time. And offer to anybody if they want to talk. Does your sister know whats going on? Do you talk to her often?

There isn't a whole lot you can do... you can't undo the damage your other family members have done to themselves and to others. All you really can do is reassure your family members (the ones you care about) that you're available. Since your dad seems to be on edge, I would try calling him when he's at work (so you go straight to voicemail). Leave a short but clear message that you love him and are always happy to talk. Let him contact you after that - it may be the same day, or it may be several weeks later - everyone deals with stress/grief in different ways.
