Unhappy Neglect? - June 4th 2011, 04:17 AM

My mother.. is not the nicest person in the world.
The closest person in my life is my sister.
So, my sister's head was "itchy" and it turned out she had lice. I told my mom, and she refused to buy her any treatment...! So, I was the one treating her for that.
I've also had a cough for a MONTH, and the nurse at my school told my mom to take me to a doctor immediately, because I was coughing up green mucus and she said it could be "acute bronchitis"... she told me "You dont get special treatment for that. Im not wasting money on you."
I am the one who has been caring for my sister the past 6 years. My dad just doesnt give a shit either. She used to hit us, but I threatened to call the police about 3 months ago, so she stopped..
Is this some sort of neglect? How can I talk to her about this..?

It would be hard to prove neglect in your case, because the green mucus didn't indicate the development of a serious illness. Failing to treat your sister's lice, however, could be seen as neglect. You could probably take your case to CPS (Child Protective Services) and argue that your parents are failing to meet your needs. A social worker could come by for regular visits and assess the cleanliness of your home environment, your physical health, and other things, such as what sorts of food items are available to you. If your parents fail to meet basic needs for you and your sister, they could be charged with negligence, and CPS could intervene by taking you and your sister out of the house to ensure you receive proper care. I think it would be beneficial for you to call CPS and at least find out what your rights are as a child, and what you can do if you decide to report your parents to CPS.

I would say that is neglect, but its hard to prove to CPS. You can try just be careful cause if you report that and CPS dose nothing then your parents can get worse and from experience it is a risk that you have to take good luck

I agree with Robin..

If the lice went untreated then that could be seen as neglect. I would take your sister to CPS and have something done. Is there a family member you could talk to about it who could help you out maybe?

Hope it goes well. <3
