Cool I had a Mochi adventure last week - June 18th 2015, 03:35 AM

Right, so last week I decided to try to make Mochi, a Japanese rice sweet stuffed with filling.

Let me tell you, when your family isn't used to making these alternative sweets, they'll look at you weird.

"Is it supposed to look like that?"
"Yes, Mom."
"Is it going to ruin my pot?"
"No, Mom. "
"Is it supposed to be green?"

Then again, maybe choosing green food dye wasn't the best choice. You know the green slime ghost from Ghostbusters? Imagine how he'd look when he went through a blender. That's what this rice goop looked like when the sugar was melting. Like it came straight out of the movie Flubber. Looked like damn mint jelly.

So this is my first time doing this, and eventually I use enough corn starch to make it so it won't stick to my fingers so bad when I mold it. Took forever, but I finally made little Mochi discs to lay out fillings in. I followed the recipe perfectly, not that it was a hard recipe. It looked just how it did in the video .I put some ice cream in the middle and take a huge bite.

Then I remember.

I.

Hate.

Rice.

I always hated rice, since I was a baby. I can eat rice when it's fried with eggs or drenched in soy sauce, but I can't even swallow plain white rice. Let me remind you that Mochi is a RICE pastry. Made of RICE. I don't know how I didn't put two and two together, but it was done. My family refused to eat any after seeing me stir the deep green glossy goop. I had to trash a whole set of perfectly fine Mochi. Makes me tear up even a week later.

Have you ever had a adventure like this?

I've wanted to try those but I'm not a rice fan either. Maybe I'll buy some to try instead of making effort to make my own, haha.

I've never made these but I have had them. The green tea are my favorite but there are other flavors like chocolate and strawberry. The rice doesn't really bother me. I admit I am not a huge fan of rice but it seemed different in the mochi.

I love mochi, you should have just mailed it to me! Although it tastes nothing like rice and mochi uses rice flour, but you still don't like it? Did you add any flavoring?

You can use any flavoring. Regular mochi just has red bean paste in the middle, but the ice cream kinds come in chocolate, strawberry, green tea, and red bean.

The regular kinds can also have taro, sesame paste, and peanut butter stuff. If you'd want mochi that doesn't taste like rice and isn't unappetizing, I suggest you go to a japanese or korean market and buy regular mochi. Trader joes also has really delicious mochi ice cream. If you live in denver, I suggest H-mart or ocean pacific marketplace
