Salt :/ - January 11th 2011, 07:21 PM

I've gotten to the point where I always put salt on my pasta. And not just a little bit anymore, I use quite a lot. And I really need to break this habit, because it's really not good for me, and I'm going to have a hard time getting in shape if my sodium intake is so much higher than it should be.

I really don't like sauce, so putting sauce on the pasta instead isn't going to work. But I'm so accustomed to putting salt on it that pasta just tastes so bland if I don't use salt.

Does anyone have any ideas that might help me stop using salt so much?

Low sodium salt exists. It's typically potassium chloride (KCl) instead of sodium chloride (NaCl).

Also, you can try limiting yourself to a certain amount of salt each day. Just set aside however much you want to restrain yourself to that day, and hide the rest away in a cupboard somewhere. Sauce might not actually be that much better than just salt, because most sauces also contain large amounts of sodium.

You could try putting crushed chillies and olive oil on your pasta, or garlic granules or a salty cheese like feta?

You could try putting low-fat cheese on your pasta.

Reduce your salt when you cook bit by bit. I used to used lots of salt when cooking and my boyfriends uses little to none so we've had to comprimise. Maybe cut a lot out when you cook and add a little when its done?

Try using other recipes and putting in things with a strong taste. At home we make different kinds of pasta sauce but generally there are ground chipotle peppers, green peppers, mushrooms, spanish onion, celery, grated carrots, 28 oz can of crushed tomatoes, pound or so of meat (beef usually). After, spices are added such as basil, parsley, garlic, chipotle peppers, ground black pepper, some salt. Toward the end, red-wine vinegar and if the sauce is too liquidy which it often is when I make it, bread crumbs from a hard Italian-style bread. People add their own cheese, lemon zest and chopped olives on the plate and whatever else.

If things are bland for you, perhaps it's just that the food isn't exciting. You don't need to be an amazing cook to make things that taste pretty good. You can buy some things pre-made then add in some fresh things.

But the problem is that I'm a really picky eater, so it makes it hard.

Could you try adding seasoning on top of your food to give it flavour? It reduces the amount of salt you put on your food (as some come with a bit of salt in them but only a tiny amount) or there's ones even without salt.

Re: Salt :/ - January 17th 2011, 06:42 PM

When I was younger, I hated red sauce. I'd eat the white Alfredo sauce, but nothing else. So I used to have noodles with a tiny bit of butter on it, and a tiny bit of Parmesan cheese. So yummmy!

And I will take you in my arms, and hold you right where you belong.

Try the low-sodium ''salt''. I've been on a restricted diet (low-sodium, 90% processed food reduction, ect.) for years because of some health issues, and well, I love salt. But I just use the low-sodium stuff (somebody else explained what it is exactly) and it tasted pretty much the same to me...
