Vegetarianism? - June 5th 2011, 11:16 PM

Hey there,

Well I've recently decided that I need to eat healthier and I'd like to lose some weight and get more toned, and my first step towards this would be becoming a vegetarian.

Now I only starting eating meat at around 11 years old, I never touched it before then, I found it gross ( still kinda do), So its not a big thing to me to give it up, not only does it make me sick when I eat it, I also am a very big animal rights activist, so I feel like a hypocrite eating meat. I don't really like and I only eat it about 3 times a week, I pretty much only eat chicken or turkey, so giving it up I think will be pretty easy. Plus my mom doesnt mind if this what I want to do, she doesn't mind buying special brands or food to help me out, and I always go grocery shopping with her so its easy to pick out what I'd like, I always make 90% of all the meals in my house, which is probaly pretty helpful to my plan.

So my questions are, what is your favorite vegetarian brand for food?? What are your favorite vegetarian recipes and books?? Websites?? Any other tips would be greatly appreciated
Thanks,
Tessa

Tofurky makes AWESOME synthetic meats, as does Quorn. They taste just like meat, but without the cruelty.

peta2.com has all kinds of tips and tricks about vegetarian and veganism.

I don't know of any books, I look up all my recipes online.

McDonald's french fries ARE NOT vegetarian. They are infuesed with beef juice! Just to let you know.

Best of luck! <3

I'm a Vegan, so my scope of products is a bit more narrow (due to the excluding of Dairy and Eggs, as well as other things, too), but it depends on what you're making what works best.

For example, Yves makes good veggie ground beef, and good veggie pepperoni. I've never tried their other stuff, like their imitation turkey breasts. Meanwhile, if you want meatless chicken, Gardein makes some good stuff, but Schneiders (yes, the meat company) makes some good meatless chicken nuggets (seriously, I Google'd to make SURE they were meatless).

If you don't want/need meat substitutes, whether for a recipe, or just to do something different, I suggest trying different recipes involving Firm Tofu. Tofu is really good when done the right way.

Feel free to PM me if you have any more questions. I'm a fellow Canadian, and have been Vegan for a bit over a year.

I'm not a vegetarian but when it comes to food I'm not all that fussy so I've tired quite a wide range of different foods including some vegetarian recipes. In the past I've had quorn mince in shepards pie, quorn pieces in a curry and I've also tired quorn sausages and I have to say, all of them were pretty good! As for recipes, I've seen that there is a really good section of vegetarian recipes on the BBC Good Food website that you could perhaps try looking at. This is the link: http://www.bbcgoodfood.com/content/recipes/vegetarian/

I really hope that I've been able to help you in one way or another and if you would like to talk further at all then feel free to PM or VM me at any time as I'm always more than happy to talk.

Good luck with your weight loss and becoming a vegetarian!

my absolute favorite brand for false meat is Morningstar Farms. they are soooooooo good! it tastes exactly like meat, especially the chicken! i dont like tofu, so i usually use those. they have all kinda of different types, like even burger chunks for spaghetti sauce and stuff lol :P

Hello...
I am a vegan and my food choices are rather limited but if you are okay with not eating any type of meat at all, then I suggest you try Indian food or maybe some Chinese recipes.
They're really good!
I hope this helps!

I'm a vegetarian, and I honestly hate the taste and texture of fake meat. I do, however, really like veggie burgers that are pretty much made of just vegetables, like corn and beans.

Oh and I absolutely love beans and bean burritos :P Especially homemade ones. And even though your mom is willing to buy vegetarian foods, check the labels of foods frequently. A lot of stuff out there seems vegetarian on the outside, but hides stuff like gelatin and chicken broth in the tiny worded ingrediant list...
