Easy, Budget Recipes -
August 23rd 2011, 02:27 PM
So I'm off to university soon and I won't have lots of money but I still need to eat obviously
![]() I'm not a great cook and I greatly prefer using the hob to using the actual oven so preferred recipes would be easy, cheap and done on the hob although I am willing to use the oven xD Does anyone have any recipes to share with me? ![]() |

* Obviously pasta is the main one! Pasta and cheese, pasta and sauce, pasta and pesto, pasta and tuna. Pasta goes with anything
* Bulk buy mince and cook it all at once to make spag bol and freeze it then just reheat it in the mircowave. * You can make curry on the hob (I ate the curry out of tins It's actually really nice!), you can fry the chicken, add the sauce then cook the rice. * Chicken wraps! * Fill a giant yorkshire pudding with veg and gravey. * I lived on chicken, anything chicken, southern friend chicken, chicken breasts, chicken kiev, chicken salads So, maybe some chicken?

Stews and soups can be really cheap if you're careful with the raw ingredients. They're useful because (especially stews) you can leave them in crock-pot all day (secondhand crock-pots usually go for >$25) and eat them for dinner.

Deifnitely pasta! I love making my own sauces to go with it, you just put half a tin of chopped tomatoes in a frying pan with a load of veggies, bring to the boil & then simmer... oh and add a bunch of spices, basil & oregano.. or I like to put lots of spicey-ness in
So I add paprika, cayenne, cumin etc x

Oooh, if you have a home bargins, shop there, very cheap stuff! It sells like tinned products and stuff. You'll need a supermarket for the fresh and frozen food

Spaghetti bolognaise is pretty easy and cheap. The only slightly expensive thing is the mince, but hey you need some protein.
![]() Method: Fry some chopped onions and garlic in olive oil and, once golden, add the mince. Heat until it turns brown. For the sauce you can either make one yourself (with tinned tomatoes, tomato puree, salt and pepper) or just use a ready-made jar. Pour this in and mix through, before reducing the heat and adding the other chopped vegetables (I recommend peppers and tomatoes). Put the lid on and leave to simmer for about 40 minutes, stirring occasionally. About 10 minutes before you want to eat it, boil some water and cook the pasta. Ta da! ![]() I would also recommend scrambled eggs on toast if you want a really quick, nutritious meal.

One of my favorites is baked breaded chicken. Cut chicken breasts (boneless, skinless) into halves or thirds (or you can use tenders), then coat them in french onion dip and then coat them in dry stuffing mix (finely ground; it acts like breading). Lay them in a pan and drizzle a little bit of melted butter over the top and then bake in the oven (on 350F) for 25-30 minutes. It's SO good and so easy. Can be eaten with just about anything (over pasta, with potatoes, etc.).

Have a look for a "Nosh for Students" cook book. The recipes are simple, cheap and most have a hob option. Pasta, noodles, toast, baked potatoes, microwave meals and some cooked vegetables are good student foods
Maybe it's not my weekend but it's gonna be my year.
