Going vegan? - April 8th 2012, 02:24 AM

I'm thinking about going vegan, and was wondering if anybody on here had some tips/experience. I'm already a vegetarian, so my goal would be eliminating all animal products. I will keep sugar in my diet, but will be eliminating eggs, milk, honey, and other products like this. My first step was doing one vegan meal a day. Any other tips would be appreciated.

My friend went vegan for a bit. Seeds and nuts are awesome! Eat them! Lol. Take it slowly. Make sure that you're getting enough nutrients. If you're finding it hard to get a good balance, take supplements until you work out what foods work best.

Is sugar an animal product? 0_o

Vegan is not only cutting out all animal products, but also cutting out processed things and things that are generally bad for you. Many vegans use Stevia or agave nectar as a substitute for sugar. I don't really get the difference, but it is healthier.

Anyways, good luck on going vegan! I thought about doing it to make me feel better, as I am usually nauseous after eating, but I don't think I could afford it or be able to do it conveniently. (I would have to pack myself breakfast and lunch everyday) I'm guessing you already do this, but make sure to get some protein bars of some sort. They help a LOT. As do nuts and beans, they have some of the same nutrients that meat does.

Also, you're going to have to take a good amount of supplements, but that's not too difficult nowadays.

If you find yourself missing food that you were eating before, there are a lot of vegan alternatives to things. There is vegan butter, vegan cheese, vegan eggs, almond milk or soy milk. They probably don't taste quite the same, but they're still pretty good, just make sure you don't have a soy allergy.

I've been Vegan for almost 2 years (will be 2 years late May).

The hardest thing is the hidden animal products in foods. Like, for example, some vegetarian items will still have egg albumen, milk protein, whey powder, etc. which are all still animal products. There are a fair few vegetarian products that may not be vegan-friendly due to these by-products.

If you have any questions, feel free to PM me, and I can answer pretty much anything you have to ask about being vegan.

You go girl! Just make sure you really, really understand what nutriens you need and how to get them. As far as I know (I've never had the courage to go vegan myself, but a lot of my friends are) you'll need to eat a lot of nuts and legumes. Avocado seems to be some kind of favourite, too.

I was vegan for a while. One thing I will say is that you should be careful to minimise the amount of processed vegan foods such as crisps and chocolate as whilst they don't contain animal products, they still aren't always that healthy in regards to nutritional value. Other than that, there are lots of yummy things that vegans can make and alternatives to more or less all animal ingredients; my mum used to make the most gorgeous lemon and poppy seed muffins that were, dare I say it, far nicer than the animal product derived counterparts using powdered vegan egg replacer and almond milks. Eat lots of nuts and pulses and you should be good to go Good luck!
