The Great Gatsby and The Glass Menagerie? - July 8th 2013, 09:27 PM

So, I have to read both these books for AP summer homework and then do 4 journal prompts on them each. I've never read either of them before, and I haven't seen the movie for The Great Gatsby. Technically I'm not "allowed" to until I read the book (strict instructions from my AP Lit teacher ) so telling me to just watch the movie won't help. The Glass Menagerie seems a little easier to understand but I swear to God the Great Gatsby looks like an illiterate monkey took a bunch of words that don't make sense when constructed into a sentence and constructed sentences out of them! I couldn't even get through the first page. I cannot understand it at all. I'm not sure what I'm looking for in terms of 'halppp' goes but has anyone read either of these? And if so can you give me any tips on how to make the reading and comprehension bearable? I go back to school on the 7th of August, and all these prompts and stuff have to be done by then. I mean it might even help to just hear that I'm not the only person who didn't understand it, if only for the sake of making me feel less like an idiot. /:

You're not the only person who didn't fully understand "The Great Gatsby". I BSed my work for it in English class so bad. Not to mention it was boring. What I got from the book is a lot of talk of the American Dream (since we had to write essays on the American Dream afterwards). What I was asked is how "The Great Gatsby" is an example of the American Dream, and basically the American Dream is about money, popularity, and love.

SparkNotes has summaries of the chapters so maybe you can read through a chapter at a time and then write down what you think it's about, then read the summary/analysis they give of the chapter?

I'll have to look up SparkNotes, I've never heard of that before. Thanks!
