Harry Potter and the Cursed Child! - July 26th 2016, 01:28 AM

Anyone excited for this? Ambivalent about it?

I have pre-ordered a copy but I originally was just gonna get it for my Kindle. I decided that I need a hard copy to go along with the other books. My boyfriend and I are also going to our local bookstore and partaking in the event they have where you stay till midnight and get your reserved copy.

I havent touched HP in ages, but considering it's series that ignited my love for reading...

I still remember the plot, despite how much time passed since I touched the books.

Maybe it's time to revisit them again, to prepare for a new one?

The risk I took was calculated, but boy, am I bad at math.

I've been so numb this has passed me by

I need to go and check it out...I have gone and got the Harry Potter books as soon as they come out (7 o'clock in the morning, since I live in a small town). Well, I found something to do for this evening

I am so excited. Which is all I can really say unless I let said excitement explode.

I just finished it, and...? I'm not really sure what to think. I mean, it was amazing to be back in Harry Potter world after finishing the series six years ago, and I've been completely obsessed with Harry Potter since I was nine, but... wow. Plotholes. Also, some of the characters felt really off (I don't want to be too specific and spoiler-y). But it was really sweet and I think it had a good message overall, even though I was disappointed with a lot of it. If anyone else has finished it, I'm dying to talk about it

I finished it. I liked it for the most part.

I am very apprehensive. I've heard a range of reviews that say it's like a fanfic and it reads terribly. But the reviews of the actual performance are amazing. So I think I will try (fingers crossed) to get tickets and watch it before I read it, because it was intended to be performed I guess. But I'll probably end up reading it anyway!

Re: Harry Potter and the Cursed Child! - August 5th 2016, 02:27 PM

I did like it. I didn't love it.
I've read scripts before so I am familiar with them. Being able to imagine how a story would play across on stage is really good. But the actual story? Ehhhh

Spoiler:

I really don't understand the Bellatrix pregnant with Voldemort's baby thing. It said she gave birth just before the Battle of Hogwarts. Surely if that was the case it would have been fairly obvious when they were at Malfoy Manor? That would only have been a couple of months before the Battle at Hogwarts and most women are clearly showing by about 4/5 months, in my experience.
Although it does explain why, when all the Death Eaters were freed from Azkaban, Bellatrix's husband was not. (Cursed Child says that the kid found out when he was released so that must have been years later, there was no mention of him when Voldemort was in power.)

I kind of liked it, although it seemed very... American. The books are British, by a British author and set in Britain. But some of the dialogue in this one seemed 'Americanised' and that bugged me a bit.

Not to mention it felt like there was too much going on in too little a space. There was room for so much more detail. It felt like it could have been twice as long but big chunks were cut out to get it down to a reasonable size and it just didn't work that well.

Apart from that I liked it!

Incidentally, does anyone know if it's supposed to be a continuation from the original books? I know it's a different author but if it's more like a sort of fan-fiction where the details don't have to add up, it'd explain the part in the spoiler tags.

I totally impulse bought the book yesterday at Target. Super excited to read it! I have heard it's more written like a fan fiction as well, though.
