Is he too young for the Harry Potter series? - June 21st 2017, 11:47 PM

My nephew is 11. He will be 12 in January. I've been thinking a lot about what I want to get him for Christmas and I think I am going to get the Harry Potter Boxed set. It's only $52 on Amazon and there are other sites where I can get it for about that price.

But, is he too young? Personally, I don't think he is. I started reading the books when I was in Fourth grade. The 4th one came out when I was in 5th (I believe). And, the fourth book is when the series starts to get a tad bit darker. So, he is going to be about a year older than I was when I read the 4th book.

He hasn't read the series. He doesn't have a lot of people in the family that get him books for Christmas so I am pretty positive that ... this will be a unique gift that he will end up enjoying.

The other series I was planning on getting him for Christmas was The Inkheart trilogy. I would be spending about $25 more on him if I get the HP box set ... but I have been setting aside a certain amount of money each month so I can spend between $30 -$50 on each child in the family.

So, one series being more expensive isn't an issue. I just don't know if he is too young. He is pretty mature for his age. He seems to like reading and I think he'd end up really enjoying the HP series.

I mean, I believe my brother lets him play call of duty? Harry Potter isn't much more mature than that, is it?

I think he's definitely old enough for HP! I read them in 4th grade too, and they were all out by the time I read the series, so I read the whole thing when I was 9 or 10 and I was fine. The full series sounds like an awesome gift.

I actually had this conversation with a coworker last week. She was mentioning that her daughter is a HUGE bookworm (not as bad as you though ) but her daughter is 9 and is currently reading the harry potter series. So he should be old enough!

I also think he's old enough. There's nothing too ''mature'' in any of the books, and if in doubt you could always talk to his parents/guardians to see if they think the series is suitable for him before getting it for him.

That said, it does make me sad that younger generations won't get to grow up with the series. I'm forever grateful that I was in the generation who matured right along with the series so that we were always ''the right age'' for it.

I think he's old enough, I know I read the books when I was younger than that, maybe grade 5? So around 9-10. There isn't that much mature stuff in the books except for the last one in the battle of Hogwarts, which wouldn't be anything he hasn't read before seeing as it's just a battle and not even that mature. Checking with the parents if you're totally unsure would be a good idea, but it should be fine.

The Harry Potter series is intended for roughly ages 9-12. I usually see it in the juvenile section for books so as long as it's within his reading level it should be fine.

Thanks everyone. I have gone ahead and purchased the box set that was on sale. I am going to go ahead and close this.
