Post What are some good book series to read? - July 20th 2009, 05:46 AM

For someone whos 19. Please don't say Twilight. Already read it and don't say Harry Potter because I plan on reading it just not yet.

Re: What are some good book series to read? - July 20th 2009, 06:11 AM

I started "A Song of Ice and Fire" by George R.R. Martin. It's a fantasy series, and it's a very good read. I don't normally like fantasy books, but I got hooked on this. I've only read 2 of the 4 books that are out now. The fifth book comes out in September I think. The guy has 7 books planned, and damn does he take his sweet time writing them in between...But oh well, as long as he finishes it..And the first book is called "A Game of Thrones."

I also heard good things about Harry Turtledove's alternate history series. I forget what the series is called, but the first book is called "How Few Remain." It's about how the south won the American Civil War, and basically moves on from there on how history could have been all the way to present day. I haven't started it yet, but I will one day.

Twilight! Seriously, don't. Ever.

I'd highly recommend The Golden Compass trilogy, if you haven't read it yet. The Enchanted Forest Chronicles is a great series too; one that I'm just finishing myself. If you want something a little heavier, I was incredibly impressed with Lucifer's Hammer, by Larry Niven.

The atoms that make up you and me were born in the hearts of suns many times greater than ours, and in time our atoms will once again reside amongst the stars. Life is but an idle dalliance of the cosmos, frail, and soon forgotten. We have been set adrift in an ocean whose tides we are only beginning to comprehend and with that maturity has come the realization that we are, at least for now, alone. In that loneliness, it falls to us to shine as brightly as the stars from which we came.

Also Malorie blackman's Nought's&Crosses books are great

I personally love the Stephanie Plum series by Janet Evanovich. It's kind of a humour/mystery. They're some of the few books that are actually funny.

Nobody here has recommended The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams? For shame!

Also some of my other favorites:

~Trinity Blood (A Japanese vampire series. It comes in two different series, "Rage Against the Moons" and "Reborn on the Mars".)
~The Lord of the Rings

If your into supernatural stuff then try:

The woman of the otherworld series by Kelley Armstrong

It has like 9 or 10 books so far but she is still working on them. They are written in the first person like Twilight but it changes characters on occasion. The first book in the series is bitten and it is about werewolves but the other books are about witches and vampires.

Even though it changes characters the plot doesn't change and it doesn't change in a way that makes it hard to understand; she will introduce a character in the previous book and continue their story in the next book. It is actually really good and a good read (I couldn't put it down! )

Sorry for the long description.

Dave Pelzer's series? There's only 3 books but they're pretty good, it's about his abusive childhood. I'd highly recommend it.

I was going to say these. I haven't read those last two. I didn't even know they existed, I thought it ended with Final Warning. I will definitely be getting those two I just hope they are better than Final Warning, that disappointed me.

Ooh read the Mortal Instruments series - City of Bones, City of Ashes and City of Glass. They're by Cassandra Clare and the first two are awesome - i neeeeed to read the third one
Also i know it's already been recommended, but the House of Night series is ace. I would still read it at 19; it appeals to a lot of age groups if you're into that sort of genre.

The Noughts and Crosses series by Malorie Blackman. they're absolutely amazing. Or if you want somethign challenging, I absolutely loved The Handmaid's tale, by Margaret Atwood, although it's by no means an easy read.

I thought it ended at Final Warning, also. That's what everybody was saying. And I hated Final Warning. xD.

But MAX is really, really good. I loved it.

FANG is not released yet.

The Saga of Darren Shan and The Demonata by Darren Shan.

If i want light reading, I love the Shopaholic series by Sophie Kinsella...and the Gossip Girl series has always been brilliant

Two books I fell completely in love with recently were 'In the Woods' and 'The Likeness' by Tana French. There's only two books in the series, but they are.......a.m.a.z.i.n.g. The only thing is that they're irish, so you may not be able to get them in the States.

Xanth by Piers Anthony. It is a 27 book-long series. I really loved them! (Only got to book #13 though).
