Harry Potter. I was 11 when the first book came out so I've grown up with that series and always looked forward to the newest book or movie.

Twilight is just too newfangled for me.

No comparison. Harry Potter has morals and messages. Rowling created a unique world- Meyer took vampires and warewolves and dumbed them down for Tweens.

They're on completely different levels of literature.

Harry Potter.

But really, they can't be compared. They have nothing in common except for maybe their target audience.

Harry Potter has a meaning behind it. Meyer's books are just meant to entertain teen girls (and certain guys...). They're not even well written.

Harry Potter is being taught in schools, for goodness' sake! They're so far above and beyond Twilight, it's not even fair to ask them to be compared. That's like comparing something like Eragon to The Lord of the Rings

I couldn't agree more. HP actually made you feel like you were right there in the middle of the book, seeing it all. I could actually relate to the characters...

It had plot turns that actually made sense and the main female character (Hermione) is like the opposite of Bella. Think about it, Hermione's smart and put grades before guys. Bella was completely infatuated with a psycho. Which one would you like to relate to more?

"Both Rowling and Meyer, they’re speaking directly to young people… The real difference is that Jo Rowling is a terrific writer and Stephenie Meyer can’t write worth a darn."

Thank you Stephen King.

I'd be inclined to disagree with some though, that the difference between Harry Potter and Twilight is that Harry Potter has messages. Twilight does have messages, just anti-feminist ones you would never want someone absorbing.

Re: Harry Potter or Twilight? - November 22nd 2009, 05:18 PM

Twilight is completely overrated. I read the first book; hated it. Saw the first movie; hated it. Hearing about New Moon and hating it. Hating everyone's obsessions over something that isn't as revolutionary as everyone's making it out to be... wow. Plus, the book was written terribly. Don't know about the other three but if the first one is I can bet you the other three are as well.

Harry Potter's pretty good. In comparison to Twilight, Harry Potter is the bible (if I was religious).

I've seen some of the Harry Potter movies, but to be honest, they bore me. I love the love story of Twilight.

Anything or Twilight? -> Anything

Seriously though, Harry Potter is great on its own merits, and doesn't need to be compared to Twilight to make it look good.

The atoms that make up you and me were born in the hearts of suns many times greater than ours and in time our atoms will return once again to reside amongst the stars. Life is but an idle dalliance of the cosmos, frail, and soon forgotten. We have been set adrift in an ocean whose tides we are only beginning to comprehend, and with that maturity has come the realization that we are, at least for now, alone. In that loneliness, it falls to us to shine as brightly as the stars from which we came.

I did find the Twilight series to be unintentionally pretty funny, though.

Harry Potter. There is just no comparison.

Twilight was very well written, if you look at it from a marketing perspective. Basically, any girl can relate to Bella because she is an empty, personality-less slate. The singular draw of the book is reading it to imagine being with Edward or Jacob. Ummm... Get a real life and a real boyfriend?

And Harry Potter? A classic book. Fun to read and well-written. Just such a cool story with interesting twists and turns. The movies are great too.

Harry Potter for the reading: I like to be absorbed in the middle of the adventures. Twilight for the characters. Honestly; which one would you chose: Harry Potter or Edward/Emmett/Carlisle/Jasper/Jacob? Hermione or Rosalie/Alice/Esme/Bella?
I love Twilight as well for the bad characters. I mean, Sneap and Voldi suck, they die. James dies as well, but he's pretty and Aro still lives.

I would MUCH rather be friends with Harry or Hermione. I mean, they have personality. They aren't just some fake, crafted character designed to appeal to tweens. And even if I was looking for a girlfriend, Hermione is so damn much better than any of the Twilight girls. I mean... none of them are anything special. Bella is a flat, boring character (and looks like a meth head in the movie) and the others are better, but still boringly stereotypical and poorly written. Though, honestly, my girlfriend in REAL LIFE makes any of these characters pale in comparison. Get a girlfriend/boyfriend in real life and read the books for the literary value and story, not for daydream fodder. [/rant]

*sigh* Honestly, the only reason why most people hate Twilight is because of all the attention it's getting now and the annoying fan girls following after it. Just because the movie sucked doesn't mean you should hate on the books. I think the first three books were really good, but the fourth one pretty much sucked. Yeah, the writing isn't anything grand, but who cares? All books don't have to be, sometimes it's nice to read something that isn't shoving morals or messages down your throat, just something nice to entertain when you need an escape.

My pick is still for Harry Potter though, just because it is something so different and original. I love Rowling's style of writing and how she's able to paint such a clear picture of everything and make you feel like you're actually living it.

Nah, I hate twilight because Stephanie Meyer took something scary, dark, and demonic like vampires and turned them into "girly men" as Arnie Schwartz would put it . Then she took one of the most mysterious and badass of legendary monsters, the werewolf and did the same... It's pathetic.

Harry Potter FTW, although I do agree that they are on completely different levels. Harry Potter is a book anyone to any age can read (and was written WAY better!) and Twilight is really for the tweens and is quite unimaginative.
