The most beautiful piece of literature I have ever read... -

"Waiting for Godot" by Samuel Beckett
I know a decent amount of people hate this play, but I am in love with it. It is a Theatre of the Absurd piece, which is quite polarizing - you either love it or hate it. "...from the heights of divine apathia divine athambia divine aphasia loves us dearly with some exceptions for reasons unknown but time will tell and suffers like the divine Miranda with those who for reasons unknown but time will tell..." Sure, it is nonsense, but it is beautiful nonsense. "VLADIMIR: Did you ever read the Bible? ESTRAGON: The Bible . . . (He reflects.) I must have taken a look at it. VLADIMIR: Do you remember the Gospels? ESTRAGON: I remember the maps of the Holy Land. Coloured they were. Very pretty. The Dead Sea was pale blue. The very look of it made me thirsty. That's where we'll go, I used to say, that's where we'll go for our honeymoon. We'll swim. We'll be happy." http://www.samuel-beckett.net/Waitin...dot_Part1.html I'd move to Rockferry tomorrow
And I'd build my house, baby, With sorrow |

There is no doubt that Samuel Beckett is a very talented writer. I haven't seen Waiting for Godot before, but I have also seen another play by him called Happy Days. If you like theatre of the absurd, I would highly suggest you check it out. It's amazing how he conveys messages through how he sets the play and the actions incorporated. Happy Days strongly relies on routine actions, and that part was really neat.
I'm not a fan of theatre of the absurd, but I understand why some people find it so enjoyable and beautiful. ![]() The great artists of our time are the ones who created something timeless. But it was never them defining it that way. Everyone has a story. What's yours? |
