How many languages are you fluent in? -

Hey guys! I'm just doing a quick survey out of curiosity. How many languages are you fluent in (can read, write, and speak at a high degree of proficiency)? It would be interesting to see how many budding polyglots might be lurking around on these threads.

Only two for me, French and English.

only english. when i lived in Turkey i got pretty decent at turkish but i wouldn't say that i was fluent.. i've lost a lot of it now though because i haven't spoken it in so long, mainly because i have no one to speak it to.. seeing as my parents didn't really pick it up and i have no reason to talk to my brother in turkish. when i go to the kebab house i impress my friends with my chatter to the guys who work there though, haha

I can speak and understand fluently 3. Spanish, English, and if Sign Language is considered a language than that one too. I do understand French and some Latin, but I can not write, read fluently.

 For me, it's 4: English, Chinese, French, and Spanish. I am Chinese by race, but have been educated in a predominantly English-speaking environment. When I was 8 I began learning French, and when I was 11 I began learning Spanish. I consider myself pretty fluent in all four; I took internationally recognized proficiency tests to gauge my abilities. HSK Level 9 for Chinese, DALF C2 for French, and DELE Intermedio for Spanish (google these if you want more info). I also took AP Spanish last year and passed it with a 5. Basically, I don't have any trouble communicating in any of these four. My folks think it's a big deal that I'm fluent in four since nobody knows anything besides English and Chinese in my family, but in reality there are plenty of people out there who could easily check off the "7 or more" poll option, especially those from Europe. :P |

It seems like a lot of people from Asian families speak a lot of languages. My ex was Chinese and she spoke Japanese, Chinese, English, and I think Korean.

@ LaFin: Oh, wow, that's impressive. But it doesn't actually apply to all Asians: I used to live in Singapore, and people held those who could speak more than 2 languages in VERY high esteem. Granted, there are 4 official languages (English, Chinese, Malay, Tamil), but each ethnic group tends to stick together and there isn't a whole lot of blending going on. Almost everyone in Singapore is bilingual, though, thanks to the Singaporean government's "Mother Tongue" program in the local schools.

1 lool, languages are something I cannot do! That said I'd love to master Chinese
 ... I can't place who but someone in my bloodline (Great aunt? Uncle?) can speak 5 I believe

I'm currently learning Chinese and am planning on learning Latin, Swedish, Portuguese, Japanese, Arabic, Hebrew, Welsh, and Irish. Yeah I'm crazy.  |

I can do english, russian, and french (...)
My boyfriend who I love to hate when it comes to being a polyglot can do English, Portuguese, French, Spanish and Italian (somewhat.. he reads books in them better than he can talk) and now Russian (my university tested him to level 4, which he learned in a year on his own). His next languages are Chinese since his dad is from Hong Kong and Swedish, and basically this guy can talk me out of the water. So that's like 6 with 2 more in active study. I am waylaid by Beauty. Who will walk Between me and the crying of the frogs? (My PM box is always open.. if I can't help you, I'll find someone who can) |

Only English fluently.
I used to be able to speak and understand quite a lot of Spanish, but lost that when I stopped doing it at school. The same with German actually. Only English ='( I'm doing quite well in French lessons in school, althoguh ?I'm no-where near fluent in it. And I want to learn Japanese so that I can move there. So hopefully in ten years time I'll be bilingual =P

I am only fluent in English. I know bits of Sign Language but hopefully I am going to start my level 1 in sign and become fluent to talk to my boyfriends deaf younger sister better.

Fluently I can do everything in English - Obviously. But I can read, write, listen to and speak in German - although I wouldn't say I'm fluent =]

I'm fluent in English, obviously. :P
I've also learned a fair amount of German, and can understand quite a bit of it, but I don't think I would consider myself fluent. It's been about 2 years since I -really- spoke it last, but I remember enough to get around the country... Now...
