what is your main muse when you write?
for me its injustice in the world, or corrupt governments.

Whether they're happy or sad, they tend to be beautiful, either way.
Even if it's something simple. Like a sign I pass every day on the way to school.

Re: attn all writers. - January 11th 2010, 05:20 AM

Honestly, it depends on what I'm writing! My inspiration comes from many places.

When I write poetry, I tend to pull my depressed thoughts out and mix them with the wonders of the world, to create a beautiful yet somehow sad work of prose. If I'm stuck...for instance, if I try to write poetry when I'm not sad...I will still turn to nature and fit it to the tune of the end of the world or something. Even just saying that I've got ideas floating through my head! Once I start out though I just match the flow so it's perfect. The words don't really have to make sense.

Now, when I write books...that's a bit harder. I'm not sure where my inspiration is from, really. The ideas just kind of come to me randomly. I never get too far in books, I write maybe 5 pages enthusiastically and then encounter severe writer's block. But every once in a while I pull out the stories and start again. Then I think my inspiration just comes from wanting to finish one for once!

The only other thing I write is papers for school, and then my muse is the dictionary. I look through it, pick an unusual word that fits my topic, and can normally write a page just from that word. Maybe I should do that for everything else too - it might help me with my vocabulary

What inspires me to write, honestly, is the lack of anything I want to read! Sometimes my characters draw me back into the story. As far as poems and songs, miss - hearing a lyric or something and being disipointed by the fact that "ragged storm" sounds so mcuh cooler than "rabbits and".

With poetry, just whatever's on my mind. I wrote a haiku today about gray snow O.o
But with fiction, it's more what music I've been listening to and what books I've been reading.

My own life. I know that sounds so vague, and maybe a bit conceited, but it's true and it really works for me. I write about what I know. And sure, there's extension in it. My imagination takes hold and transports me to places I've never seen and into the minds of strangers. But I start with me.

When I write a poem, I take the emotions I'm feeling and think of all the possible situations I could be in that would cause me to feel those emotions. Or sometimes I just simply describe any emotion that's become prominent in my life.

I agree.

Personally, i've found that I can only write poetry when i'm feeling a really strong emotion. With other types of writing I don't really need anything specific to inspire me.

My muse tends to be love mixed with nature. Most of my poems are very descriptive about the surroundings and the feelings. I tend not to just "speak" my poem. By that I mean not used an adjectives in my writing.
