Anyone? - April 20th 2010, 01:46 AM

Okay, I just have a quick question.

I am looking for some books on WW2, Civil war, Revolutionary war. I have a deep interest in these subjects. I will take non-fiction, biography's on the subject but I am really interested in fiction too.

Thanks in advance!

There could never be amore beautiful you
Don't buy the lies, disguisesandhoops they make you jump through
You were made tofill a purposethat only you could do
So there could never be amore beautiful you
-Johnny Diaz

Everyday
is so wonderful
And suddenly it's hard to breathe
Now and then I get insecure
From all the pain, I feel so ashamed

I am beautiful no matter what they say
Words can't bring me down
I am beautiful in every single way
Yes, words can't bring me down, oh no
So don't you bring me down today

To all your friends you're delirious
So consumed in all your doom
Tryin' hard to fill the emptiness, the piece is gone
Left the puzzle undone, ain't that the way it is?

'Cause you are beautiful no matter what they say
Words can't bring you down, oh no
You are beautiful in every single way
Yes, words can't bring you down, oh no
So don't you bring me down today

Have you read The Book Thief by Markus Zusak?

Quote:
It’s just a small story really, about among other things: a girl, some words, an accordionist, some fanatical Germans, a Jewish fist-fighter, and quite a lot of thievery. . . . Set during World War II in Germany, Markus Zusak’s groundbreaking new novel is the story of Liesel Meminger, a foster girl living outside of Munich. Liesel scratches out a meager existence for herself by stealing when she encounters something she can’t resist–books. With the help of her accordion-playing foster father, she learns to read and shares her stolen books with her neighbors during bombing raids as well as with the Jewish man hidden in her basement before he is marched to Dachau. This is an unforgettable story about the ability of books to feed the soul.
I'm not really sure if it's what you're looking for, but I'd recommend the book regardless!

Any civil war or just the American Civil War? Because George Orwell wrote a brilliant account of the Spanish Civil War called "Homage To Catalonia".

For fictional books about the American Civil War there are several books by Bernard Cornwell. I must admit, it's the only series by him that I've not got round to reading but if it's like any of his other historical novels then they will probably be very good. "Rebel" is the first book of the American Civil War series.

I would recommend
The Hiding Place by Corrie Ten Boom
The Nazi Officer's Wife by Edith Hahn Beer
Both are about World War Two, but they are very good. Night by Elie Wiesel is a great book, like Holly said.

He also wrote Animal Farm, which is good.

Slaughter-House Five
By: Kurt Vonnegut

It is a FANTASTIC fictional story that centers around a man's life before and after the bombing of Dresden in WWII. It's pretty odd, mostly because the man believes he has the ability to move back and forward in his own life and thinks he has been captured by Trafalmadorians (aliens) during portions, but it's truly amazing.

It's not a weird-scifi book like it may sound. I couldn't recommend it any more, and it's honestly one of my favorite books.

Hell, my signature quote is from it (:

Re: Anyone? - April 29th 2010, 11:28 PM

By far the best autobiography of WW2 I have read, and I've read lots, is Guy Sajer's 'The Forgotten Soldier'. Its about a French man in the German army on the Eastern Front (against the Russians).

Its very interesting to read the war from a German's perspective. Of course its a lot more horrific to read it from the loser's perspective, because when everything goes wrong in Russia his unit is constantly being pushed back and they keep hoping for a strong counter-attack thats never going to happen. And the most shocking part, this is not a spoiler, is that he doesn't even know that they are actually fighting AGAINST France. The whole time until the end of the war he thought Germany and France were on the same side!

It'll make you cry. He was only 17 when he joined up.

I thought I'd spit out some more fiction. I've never read these books, but I heard great things:

It's an alternate-history series by Harry Turtledove. It's called "Timeline-191" (don't ask) and the first book is called "How Few Remain." Basically, the south won the civil war and he writes about what would have happened over the course of the next century. Something different, I suppose.
