Good books? -
April 23rd 2010, 08:01 AM
I'm always looking for great new books to read. I've always loved reading, I'm always in the middle of a book, and I collect books (really old and new). ^_^ So I'm just wondering if you guys have any good book suggestions for me? I like pretty much anything....mystery, sci-fi, fantasy, fairy-tales, teen, comedy, non-fiction and all that that entails (i.e. biographies, true events, etc), comic books, and I delve a little into manga (I'm currently rereading the first and only series I've picked up).

Anything by Jodi Picoult is amazing! Like, My Sister's Keeper, Handle with Care, Change of Heart, etc.
Also, I like: 13 Reasons Why (Loved it) Impulse (and the other books that are like it) Perfect Drowning Anna Just Listen Speak I hope that helped.

I like The Perks of Being a Wallflower.
Plus, I always check out the What I'm Reading Now thread to see what people are reading or get some ideas on what I can read next. [you can fly, but that only

I'd recommend The Perks of Being a Wallflower (Chbosky), Cut (McCormick), Scarred (Andrews), Just Listen (Dessen), The Bell Jar (Plath) and Second Glance (Picoult).

Turns out I have pretty similar tastes to many people here.
![]() I was also going to recommend Jodi Picoult. I'm reading The Perks of Being A Wallflower now, and I'm loving it, so you might like to give that a go. Ellen Hopkins is also good (Impulse, Crank, etc). You also might like Terry Pratchett - I've read some of the Discworld books, and absolutely loved them. Also, The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is definitely worth a read (I find Adams' style of writing somewhat similar to Pratchett's, so if you like one you might like the other). PM me if you want any more suggestions. I love reading too.

Jodi Picoult is amazing! Her books are wonderful. I adore them.
I just got done reading the Maximum Ride series, by James Patterson. It is written in simple language, so a 6th grader could read it, but it is just so much fun! The books are about these kids with wings. Most of my friends love them. |

Try the harry potter series (if you haven't already). Otherwise try reading Good Omens (Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman).
For manga, try Rorouni Kenshin. Good luck! I am different.

Thank you all for the suggestions! I'll most certainly look into most of them. (I've lost count how many times I've read Harry Potter. I'm not really into Stephanie Meyer or Sarah Dessen.)

Re: Good books? -

It seems I have different tastes than others here, so:
If you want another take on fantasy that isn't Harry Potter (and better, if I may add), I'd suggest a series called "A Song if Ice and Fire" by George R.R. Martin. The first book is called A Game of Thrones. I don't really know how to describe it without making it sound lame, but it really is awesome. What I mainly like about it is how many risks the author takes with the story. It's very unpredictable and characters get it pretty rough (Let's face it: Rowling would have NEVER killed off Harry, Hermoine, or Ron). I finally got my sister to read it, (she was VERY reluctant) and now she's all over the series. The only downside is that it's not finished. There's 4 books out, and there's supposed to be 7. And the guy reeaally takes his time between books. And I wouldn't wikipedia this, as there are mega spoilers on it. If you want something different and with a very dark sense of humor, I'd pick up a book by Chuck Palahniuk. Ever seen the movie Fight Club? He wrote that. If you liked that movie then I'm sure you would like his other works. I'd recommend that, or "Choke". You say you like mystery. I'd recommend Michael Connelly novels then. They're not really very challenging, but they're very fun and fast reads. He mainly writes a series of books that follow a detective Harry Bosch (I think theres 12+ books now?), and also writes others. Pretty much any book by him would do. My favorites were Angel's Flight and Blood Work so far. (I've read about 5 of his books). If you want some good classics, I really liked Crime and Punishment, Catch 22, 1984, A Clockwork Orange, Catcher in the Rye...I think I've given enough suggestions

I'm a fan of magic/fantasy books. I recommend reading the Gemma Doyle trilogy and Fearie Wars trilogy... For manga I strongly suggest Scott Pilgrim, it's hilarious.

Jim Butcher's The Dresden Files. Urban fantasy/detective mystery set in 90s Chicago. It's a little darker than Harry Potter but I really enjoyed it. There are...12 books out currently:
1. Storm Front 2. Fool Moon 3. Grave Peril 4. Summer Knight 5. Death Masks 6. Blood Rites 7. Dead Beat 8. Proven Guilty 9. White Night 10. Small Favor 11. Turn Coat 12. Changes Changes was just released a couple of weeks ago (I actually haven't read it yet, need to get to the bookstore). It's very in-depth and worth a read. Also, if you like Twilight you'll love Thomas Raith. Anders: That's not evasive.
Isabela: Look, I didn't get where I am by showing my hand, you know? Anders: No, it's not your hand that I've heard you've been showing... |

His style isn't for everyone. I just happen to like it. If he can make me cringe and laugh on the same page then I just think there's something to it. I also found Choke to be better than Fight Club...But again, just my opinion. Sorry for posting your opinion? Pleeease. EDIT: My one main complaint would be that this guy never really changed his formula for his other books. That's why I never finished the 4th, because I already felt like I read it. Read one or two, then you've read them all. I hate when authors do this (coughCRICHTONcough). Doesn't mean that they're bad though. Quote:

I've read the third book in the series (Fragile Eternity) and actually quite liked it, so I'd second that recommendation.

Gonna recommend some really out of the way books that apparently no one reads. If you're willing to set in, dig in your feet (and a pillow) and read for days on end, and love every second of it assuming you love fantasy as much as myself, Terry Goodkind's Sword of Truth series. If you've seen Legends of the Seeker, you've heard of it, but you have no idea what is in store. The Legends of the Seeker takes the story, rips it up, and makes a bad mockery of some of the best fantasy literature I know of. After that Anne Bishop is also an amazing Author. I recommend opening with the Shadows and Light Series, then moving onto Sebastian and Belladonna, and finishing the the Black Jewels books. If you have a taste for reality Running with Scissors is also an outstanding book, as is Dry. They are however egregiously depressing, I warn you now. That's all I got for now.

the "Crank" books by Ellen Hopkins, "Jerk, California," "Just Listen," "Speak," "Cut," "Looking for Alaska," and the "Twilight" books are some of my favorites.

The Hunger Games series by Suzanne Collins is amazing. I haven't read the second book yet but I'm in love with the series so far.
Any book by Maureen McCarthy or Melina Marchetta is also good. And Fallen by Lauren Kate is a good read too. If you like dark-fantasy-romance. I would also reccommend reading Stephenie Meyer's The Host even if you didn't like the Twilight series so much. It's a different type of book altogether. I was hesitant to read it at first (even though I liked her other books) because of the whole sci-fi thing but I picked it up one boring day and haven't looked back since. Really good. ![]() I've been seeing you in my dreams lately But you're always on the periphery, Out of reach. NEED TO VENT? CLICK HERE. Never forget, you are not alone. ♥ |

Dan Brown books are normally really good and interesting, but they're not for everyone.
'Angels and Demons' was good (maybe you saw the movie) 'The Lost Symbol' is his new one, and it's really good too. This record broke on its own. |
