What books didn't you enjoy? - August 22nd 2010, 03:26 PM

Does what it says on the tin.

I tried to read Great Expectations by Charles Dickens and didn't enjoy it. Actually, I gave up and decided not to read it. How about you guys?

Re: What books didn't you enjoy? - August 22nd 2010, 03:45 PM

Crime and Punishment by Dostoevsky is one of only two books I've ever started reading and then given up on. It's incredibly over-rated and pretentious, not to mention dull. You can really tell that he only wrote it to fuel his gambling addiction. Not a masterpiece by any stretch of the imagination.

Demian by Hermann Hesse, was a terrible psuedo-philosophical book of rubbish. As was The Alchemist by Paul Coelho (the 2nd book I've ever not completed was also by Paul Coelho called The Zahir).

The other one which springs to mind was Hemingway's "The Old Man and the Sea", and I'm usually a fan of Hemingway. Sure, I can see why people liked it but to me the symbolism was obvious (almost thrust in your face rather than subtle) and it seemed rather poorly written. Then again, I might need to read it again as I read it so long ago that I may have been unfairly harsh.

The Old Man and the Sea. Oh god. You think "No way. He can't go on for 75 pages about this one fish." And then you see.

I really, really dislike Hemingway--I absolutely can't stand The Sun Also Rises. If I wanted to know that much about bullfighting, I would have researched it myself. Other than that, there's really not much plot. You get a little snippet of something that could develop, maybe, between the main character and Brett, but Hemingway skips right over that and instead has him tell you "I thought I loved her," when they've had about two minutes of substantial page time together.

And Wuthering Heights. You can't like either of them; they're self-absorbed and terrible people. Not even their love can redeem them, despite what I've heard fans say. They're just nasty. The writing itself is good. The plot, I could have done without.

I've just stopped reading a certain philosophy book called Truth, simply because it's mostly pointless. Let me explain: The author, at the start of the book dedicates an entire chapter to examining "the issue" and framing a question. He then gives a wonderfully clear explanation of various philosophical viewpoints, before finally using clear observation to answer the aforementioned question. However at this point the book's still only at the halfway mark, so afaics the rest of the book examines things mostly unrelated to the question he's said he was answering in the first place! I could be wrong, but I'm not going to waste time finding out...

I try not to dislike books I read, because then it would mean all the time I spent reading them would be wasted. Same thing with movies.

The Odyssey. It was too long, the main character was a Gary Stu, and Homer had a very obnoxious way of describing everything with the same exact words.

The Count of Monte Cristo wasn't very enjoyable either, though that might be because I had to read the full, unabridged version (1243 pages) in barely a month and a half. Half of the scenes were absolutely unnecessary.

I also hated a lesser known book called Out of Time by John Mardsen (or something like that.) It was supposed to be about a kid with a time machine, but half the story was random little snippets of other stories that never went anywhere. The plot basically had no structure.

Lord of the Flies. I really couldn't get into this book at all. We started off doing it for English, then switched to Of Mice and Men thankfully.

I got bored of Eragon and stopped reading it - I may try it again though if I can be bothered
Though I once started reading this spy thriller book, ugh three or something chapter describing a bicycle ride - it just went on and on sooooooo boring
I read Great Expectations whilst in primary school lol It was a bit boring in parts though I did kind of enjoy it

"Megan" by Mary Hooper. It's depressing, whiny and confirms negative stereotypes. I have no idea why she's so well-rated because her vocab and writing style is pretty dull.

Songs of the humpback whale - Jodi Picoult. I've got and read all of her books, but this one was incredibly hard to concentrate on. It takes a while for you to actually get into the story, but the rest is a disappointment. Nothing like the Jodi Picoult I love.

Also, The Lord of The Rings trilogy... tried so so hard to read it but my brain just couldn't handle it. I kept having to go back and read through the last bit but i'll still forget.

That's one of my favourite books by her!

I recently read Oranges are not the only fruit by Jeanette Winterson, I'd been told it was a really good read and had been recommended it by several people but I really didn't enjoy it.

I wasn't crazy about Of Mice and Men, but that's mostly because I wanted to slap Lenny. And I couldn't, y'know, because he's not real. But still, killing a woman and a puppy... not cool, Lenny, not cool at all.

Insomnia- Stephen king ( I couldn't get into it and I tried twice. I find that it is either hit or miss with Stephen King)

Grapes of Wrath. I tried so hard to get into it but couldn't. I was kind of disappointed about that one!
