Books vs Their Movies - March 31st 2011, 12:46 AM

I'm curious about what you guys think about this. Are there any movies you think were better than the original books? Or are the books usually better?

I'll mention a popular one - I think while the Harry Potter movies are fantastic, the books are impossible to beat.

What about upcoming movies? Any predictions? I'm eager to see how The Hunger Games movie turns out, and The Host.

Wicked Lovely is coming out in 2012, I'm super excited for that and I hope they do the book justice or I'll be disappointed.

Also, the Harry Potter movies are good but in comparison to the books they'll never be better.

However, I prefer The Notebook movie to the book

In my opinion, anything made first is better.
And in most cases, it would be books. So, normally the books are better.
Like, I prefer to read Harry Potter any day of the week then watch the movie.
I think that people try to make the movies better then the books by adding/removing things,
and it doesn't always work. Most times, it just makes it worse.

Re: Books vs Their Movies - March 31st 2011, 11:26 AM

I can't really think of any. The books are always superior, when compared to the movie adaptations. However, I sort of enjoyed the movie version of Memoirs of a Geisha, rather than the book. That is the only exception I really have. Other than that, the books have always been pleasing for me. Think about it, a movie is no longer than a couple of hours, so it isn't possible to fit a whole novel into a film. Things are left out, parts are left out, characters are left out. That always annoyed me.

I have seen many movies that were made from books, only one ever gave the book true justice but it wouldn't be appropriate to post. However it is usually disappointing. Like the golden compass.

I personally think that nine times out of ten books are better than the movies. In books, you can get inside a characters mind and understand what they are thinking better/ how they are feeling.

I think, therefore I am.

the movie for the time travelers was better than the book in my opinion.

Re: Books vs Their Movies - April 7th 2011, 03:03 PM

Let's see...what book/movie combinations do I know....

Harry Potter. I love the books...they are amazing. I thought they did a pretty good job on the first movie though, and the second one was fairly decent (still like the books much better though). After that, the movies started getting really horrible. So horrible in fact, that I haven't got the heart to see the most recent one. Now, I thought the books started getting worse at book 5, but they were still okay, and sort of recovered. The movies started getting bad at movie 3...and they have not recovered at all.

Lord of the Rings. I actually prefer the movies. I read The Hobbit and liked it, I read Lord of the Rings and couldn't get through it. It was too boring, and I could not get past the writing style. I know many will disagree with me, but I did not like the writing style one bit. Which is probably why I didn't like the book. So when they came out with the movies, I did not expect to like them. But I did. Go figure.

The Chronicles of Narnia. I like the first two books, and I actually thought the movies were really good. I got through the third book and fourth book...they were sort of boring. I'm stuck on #6, and have been for over a year now. I can't get through it, it's so horrible I would be curious to see how movies for those turn out. Will I continue to like them, or will it be the same for me as with the book? Though personally, I am waiting for the movie for the sixth book so I can advance to the last one.

Twilight. I have hated that series more and more as time has gone on, but after reading the first book I got curious to see who their cast would be. The verdict? They did a bad job. A really, really bad job. Both with casting and the movie itself. Wow. I am honestly surprised fans of that book like the movie. I think I would be angrier about it if I was a fan, and I'm already angry enough that it's floating around out there.

Eragon...I didn't like the book, and I never saw the movie. From what I saw, they were totally different, and the movie was horrible. Cirque du Freak...I saw a commercial for a movie for that, and then it pretty much fell off the face of the planet. I would like to see that though, I'm fairly attached to the book series. The Golden Compass...another one I didn't go and see. I like the concept of the series, and read the books, but I could never really get into them.

If they ever make a movie for the Belgariad, I would want to see it. I'm really afraid they would ruin it, it's such a long and involved series. But I would want to see it anyway. I feel it's nice to have a movie representation...it can clear up little things, like the tune of a song that was sung in the book, the exact way a person looks...the visual and audio to go along with it can give a beautiful meaning to a book if they at least get their cast and setting right, even if they mess up everything else.

I think that the books are almost always better than the movies. However there are a few cases that don't follow that.

I like the movie The Notebook much better than the book. The book was good too, but the ending in the movie is so much better.

I usually don't think one is better than the other, they both have their own merits, so I usally don't compare them like that. However, I refuse to watch the Harry Potter movies. They annoy me and I'm not sure why. I've read all the books like three times, but I've only seen the first four movies.

The Harry Potter books are waaaaaaaaaaay better than the crappy movies( with an exception of "The Prisoner of Azkaban".
As for the Chronicles of Narnia i like both the movies and the books.Twilight i can't believe how boring the movies and the books are they put me to sleep.I've read the first book of the Twilight series and it was so hard to finish it i couldn't stand Bella( what a stupid girl).Ive watched only half of the second movie and the third movie and definitely dont plan on watching the fourth movie.

I liked New Moon's movie more than the book.

Lord of the Rings...I think it's unfair to compare them, they're so different. They're both works of art yet so different. I'd probably pick the movies over the books, for now, but I'm increasingly becoming a literary snob so we'll see...

I love the movies (though it's been awhile...), but I haven't read the LOTR books. Are they good?

I much prefer Tell No One to the movie. Also Into The Wild (the book) was SO MUCH BETTER!!! than the movie.

One movie I did like better was White Oleander... I didn't like that book at all and I loved the movie.

It probably comes down to which you saw first.

To love. To be loved. To never forget your own insignificance. To never get used to the unspeakable violence and the vulgar disparity of life around you. To seek joy in the saddest places. To pursue beauty to its lair. To never simplify what is complicated or complicate what is simple. To respect strength, never power. Above all, to watch. To try and understand. To never look away. And never, never, to forget

I think that's probably true in most cases. I read all the Harry Potter books except the first one before I saw the films and I find the first book to be a bit meh but still like the film whereas for all the others the books are miles better than the films
