manager problems - August 10th 2011, 01:28 AM

Hey everyone my name is jessica and this is my first post! I hope this is in the right category:

Today my manager at a fast food restaurant got really upset with me and made me leave but I'm not sure if I really am at fault so I would like to know what you guys think. Today I was originally to work from 5-9pm but the morning manager (let's call her Shannon) called me in the working and asked me if I could work from 10-4pm because they were understaffed in the morning and really needed my help. I gladly agreed because i prefer working in the morning and that way I could do some errands afterwards and my whole day wouldn't be ruined. at 4pm the main manager Bob comes in and Shannon tells him that I came in at 10 and she told me I can leave at 4 but Bob says I need to stay for the second shift. I looked at him and asked him if he was serious but he just sent me on my break. During my break I explained my situation to two coworkers and they told me to just tell him because its not fair. Being a chicken, i opted to stay despite wanting to leave. After my break, i passed one of my coworkers and I told him I was nervous but if I should tell him something. My coworker being nice went up to Bob and told him for me even though I DIDN't tell him to do that. My manager than called me to him and told me to leave because he "hate hate HATES it" when people tell others about problems and I should not have told anyone and only him. I told him I felt bad leaving them because no one was there to take my spot but he kicked me out. Did he over exaggerated or am I being emotional about this because he yelled at me. I'm still a little shaky. I didn't even talk back to him after offering to stay and him saying no, I grabbed my things and left. I thought I was entitled to asking for opinions and advice? and its not a bad thing that I told my coworkers, I just wasn't sure if I could get out of working the second shift and I wanted to know what they thought. My coworker felt bad too because he had gotten me in trouble but I don't blame him. He was just trying to help even though I didn't ask him to tell my manager. What do you guys think? a little background info: this is my first job and ive only been working for about a month

I don't understand your manager's rationale because informally, you did tell him of the issue by saying, "are you serious?" after Shannon told him you worked 10-4. You could have been more formal and vocal about it because he essentially is your boss, not a fellow co-worker. That said, I think he has a stick up his ass by saying you come to him for all problems, not other co-workers. Clearly if you wanted to know where to put a pan, you wouldn't bring the pan to him and ask where it goes, you'd ask a co-worker.

Saying, "I didn't tell him to say that" is not a valid excuse. Obviously you were distressed to tell your co-workers about it and then said you were too nervous to tell him, implying if they care at all, they'll talk to him for you. Indirectly you did tell them to talk to Bob.

You were too emotional in running away with your tail between your legs and still being shaky. I've worked in restaurants (not fast-food places) and you'll get yelled at but you have to have skin, a spine and a proverbial pair of balls of steel. You have none of them. If I were in your shoes (I was told quite often to work longer hours), if I disagreed I either told the manager or I sucked it up because it meant more money. If I were told to leave I'd disagree, tell him it won't happen again and get back to working.

In sum, you're both at fault.

I can rip you off, and steal all your cash, suckerpunch you in the face, stand back and laugh. Leave you stranded as fast as a heart-attack.

Yeah, just tell him you're going to walk out. I won't say you don't have a spine, but make sure not to let him think that. Once you've been taken advantage of, you can't stop the cycle, so stand up for yourself. Definitely talk to him face to face though, don't let him hear shit through the grapevine. And remember, don't lose your mind over fast food (or try not too .
Your job ain't worth your health -- always remember that, and it's why I carry a handgun at my retail job in violation of policy. Do it big and don't take shit from coworkers, customers give you enough.

Anyways he apologized today for his reaction and we were even joking around today so all is good )
