Physical/Somatic Symptoms. - June 24th 2013, 01:46 AM

Hey everyone!

I was just wondering if any of you have a problem with your anxiety manifesting itself mainly through somatic/physical symptoms. I was diagnosed several years ago with generalized anxiety disorder/panic disorder and I find that most of my symptoms are physical, I get - muscle aches/pains/tension, head zaps, feelings of choking, trembling, etc.
I've been off my antidepressants for about 4 months now after being on them for 2 or 3 years because they caused a very dramatic weight gain which made the problem worse, but anyways not the issue. I'm trying to stay off the pills and I can manage all my other symptoms but my physical ones, specifically the muscle pain is something I can't manage to overcome and it sends me into a spiral of "oh my god, i'm dying, what disease could I possibly have if my neck muscles are hurting, oh my god my legs hurt i must have blood clots that are on their way to my heart and i'm going to die."

So basically, do any of you have a problem with somatic symptoms and if so have you been able to manage them without medication? I'm willing to go back on the medication if it is necessary but i'm trying to exhaust all my options before speaking to my doctor about that again.

P.S. Yes, i've done therapy/CBT, it helps to an extent.

Hi there

I struggle with anxiety and years ago I was having horrific panic attacks making me be sick and pass out. I still have them but not so bad. These days, like you, my muscles ache, I feel sick, I get headaches, I can't stop shaking and it's horrible. Are you still having CBT? I know you said you found it helpful but if you've stopped doing it now, do you think it might be worth going back down that road to see if it can help you some more? Apart from therapy and medication, I try to do things like relaxation, yoga, hot bubble baths, breathing techniques and challenging negative thoughts. Have you tried any of these? If not maybe it would be worth the try?

And if it is that bad, see your doctor, tell them you really don't want medication for it and see if they have any suggestions which don't involve medication. In the long run, if you try these alternative therapies etc, then maybe you need to look into going on a medication specifically for anxiety which would be something you could talk to your doctor about if it gets tot hat stage. Also, dealing with what it is that makes you anxious. Talk to people about it. Get help. Don't be alone.

We're always here too. Keep your head up.
Jessie.

Thank you for the response but i'm thinking I will have to explore the medication road again. CBT didn't work very well for me because I have more generalized/health related anxiety and it makes it hard to do things like challenge negative thoughts because you can't really go "So what?! or What if?!" to "I think i'm going to die". Again, thank you though!
