Angry What's wrong with being afraid?? - July 9th 2013, 12:52 AM

UGH. When my mom got home, she asked if I had eaten. I said no because there was nothing I could eat. She said there was chicken in the freezer, why didn't I eat that. I'm scared to death of ovens. That's why I didn't eat that. I know it's irrational, but I am absolutely terrified of ovens. So she put it in, making me take it out. I burnt my hand. Which is why I'm terrified of ovens in the first place. My mom got really mad at me when I told her I was scared of ovens, telling me that I was just doing it to get somebody to make the food for me. But that's not it at all. I am honestly terrified of ovens. That's why I burnt my hand - it was shaking so badly that it touched the oven by mistake and got burnt.

Okay so the oven fear is what you call a phobia (irrational fears). There’s all different kinds of them, people can be afraid of anything. Most common ones are phobia of spiders, heights, and dogs. I would suggest talking to a councelor or therapist about yours because phobias CAN be fixed. They usually start off by doing something like showing you a picture of a oven and asking you what you are feeling by looking at it and end by telling you to put something in the oven and cook it. That’s the VERY last step of getting therapy for it though and won’t happen on the first day. It takes a while to build up to that but by the time you get to that point, you’ll be feeling fine, I promise=)

Like, looking at an oven doesn't scare me. I just can't be near one when it's turned on.

Okay well however scared you are, whether its being around one when its on or whatever, they will start out small with helping you overcome that fear.

You could say your fear is rational because you have hurt yourself on the oven, but you have to think about the fact that you have complete control. You can turn the oven off when you like, open the door when you like, put things in and out when you like. You have power over the oven and it will not do anything you don't want it to do.

I know you burnt yourself but accidents happen and perhaps that was due to anxiety, you weren't focusing too well?

I think the reason your mum is concerned is because she doesn't want you to limit your life. You could argue that by being afraid of the oven you won't cook for yourself and nutrition is important.

Take it one step at a time. This is your issue to face.
Good luck.
