I Can't Cope! - March 18th 2014, 12:12 AM

I was diagnosed with social and general anxiety disorder last year before being referred to a young people's mental health clinic where I was told that a therapy organisation was going to take me on and I should hear within 6 months.

It's been 9 months and still nothing.

The stress of my A Level exams and choosing wether or not to go to Uni is making my anxiety worse. I only leave the house to go to college, and before I leave I get really nervous and start to panic. So by the time I get to college I'm all worked up and have a full blown panic attack, sit in the toilets and cry.

I'm not coping and I feel like my family and friends just don't understand what it's like. My main problem is that I fear what people think of me. I'm constantly convinced people are looking at me when I'm in public even though they're not. It's not me being vain, I genuinely think that people judge me on my weight, what I wear, how my make up or hair looks.

I'm slowly driving myself insane. I don't see me ever overcoming this.

You can overcome this! Don't care what others think. The best people will love you for you no matter what! The only person you should care what they think about you is you! As long as you love yourself everything will work itself out in the end! I really hope things get better for you! Message me if you ever need me! I hope they contact you back! Stay strong!

Hey Summer and welcome to TH

I also suffer from anxiety, although not as severe, so to some extent I understand what you're dealing with. I recently got help for mine and one of the most effective (albeit simple) things I was taught is to take deep breaths and repeat to myself "be calm". The breathing slows down the physical response and the message to yourself gives your mind something else to think about that is simple, manageable, and easy to remember. Be careful not to yell it at yourself though because that might make it worse.

Something else that might help is to remember that you can't control what other people think. Most people aren't paying as much attention to you as it feels like they are, even you admit this on some level. Also, if someone wants to spend they're time and energy judging you, it's a reflection on them and they're going to do it whether you become anxious over it or not. I know it's hard not to let it get to you, but you are just fine the way you are and you can absolutely overcome this.

Thank you I shall keep the messaging thing in mind as it's nice to have someone to talk to.

Thank you I've been trying to find ways to help me just get through the attacks because they seem to be worse when I try stop them in their tracks though you're advice seems something I can do easily.

And I know exactly what you mean. I know that people aren't judging me yet it doesn't process in my brain. But thank you again

I'm glad I could help I would start that as soon as you start to feel it building so you can get at it before it gets out of control. I was surprised how soon it helped. Good luck!
