Really bad today... - May 6th 2015, 01:29 PM

It hasn't been great recently, but it's very bad today..... I don't know how to make it go away.

Hey there,

Do you feel like you need to talk to somebody? I'm not sure what you're dealing with, but I used to have social anxiety so I might be able to help you or at least be someone to talk to. Feel free to PM me if you want HUGS and I hope you feel better!

Thank you so much. When you say you 'used to' have social anxiety, how did you manage to get over it? Yesterday I had to go out at 3.30 and I spent the whole time leading up to that feeling sick and near tears at the thought of facing people.

Is what you're talking about social anxiety? You didn't specify and it seems like any mental health struggle could fit the description. However if it is social anxiety, something that helped me (which I still struggle with but I can say I improved) was to take trips to the bathroom just for breaks to calm down and get away for a bit, during at large party events or family gatherings or "enjoyable" places I went out of obligation or my presence was a statement to show I care. I'm not sure the context though, is this place someplace you want to go to? or is it necessary for something? i often do the stuff I have to do out of responsibility by reminding myself how important it is/what the consequences are if I don't and 2) preparing in advance, even rehearsing (if I'm required to say something in specific) and visualizing it in my head and playing it in my head with a positive outcome helps for me to actualize a positive outcome. 3)telling myself it will be over in x amount of time so I might as well just go through the ride to the best of my ability. So self-talk helped a lot.

I did have slip ups where I came late because I had to calm down or skipped or I would not show up to an event (or I would show up and regret it because of how horrible I felt the entire time) but overall it is something that works.

As for going out with friends or going out as an enjoyable thing, I do not have advice with that because I have avoided most of those. I imagine though that hanging out with a smaller group is far easier than a large group, though that can backfire because smaller groups are more intimate and therefore more attention to you because it is distributed among fewer people.
I'm willing to listen if you'd like to explain more on what is going on for you.

Re: Really bad today... - May 8th 2015, 11:40 AM

Thanks so much. I found it too hard to write about at the time, but yep, social anxiety. I had to go to work - I've just started a new job in hospitality that involves being very outgoing and perky, and even though all my co-workers are absolutely lovely and the job isn't extremely hard, you can't really be shy in there. It always takes me a while to get comfortable with unfamiliar situations and if I'm having a bit of a shy day, the thought of having to be extraverted and outgoing can completely freak me out. I was feeling sick about it for the whole day. I know it'll get easier but for some reason social anxiety has been popping up a lot for me lately and it makes some days very difficult.
