Fear of being left alone/lost -
September 5th 2011, 04:15 PM
I've always had a fear of being left alone. Like, if I go places with my family/friends I have a fear they will leave me there and I can't get back home
It all started when I was about 6. Me and my family went on holidays to a hotel. Me, my dad and sister were watching a movie in the TV room, my sister didn't feel well so my dad took her back to the hotel room and left me in the room alone. He took ages to come back and I thought he left me there :/ I even hate it when my friends go to the toilet and take ages. I don't know why >.> I've spoken to my mental health nurse about this but she's kind of useless tbh :| Does anyone know how I could be less anxious over this? I know even if I was left on my own I could always get a taxi home but it still scares me :/ ![]() |

I have the exact same fear as you, but I'm not exactly sure of a way you can fix it. I think you just need to have your emergency plan in order so it won't be as scary. Maybe if you feel more safe you won't be as anxious about it? I don't know, just a thought

Honestly, because of the childhood experience you had, it's probably some kind of situational anxiety.
Maybe if you explain this to friends, you can hold on to a collateral item, so you trust they'll come back? Whether it be their cellphone, purse, whatever while they use the restroom. The collateral could easily give you a sense of safety, until you get more used to the idea that they'll come back for you.

My friend does that sometimes. Asks me to hold his bag or whatever, that does make me feel safer but a part of me still thinks he may leave me :/

If you have your friends' stuff, it's highly unlikely they'll leave you. I don't think they would anyways, but I mean, they'd DEFINITELY want to come back for their stuff, at the very least.
