Unhappy Help With My Room - September 25th 2010, 04:22 PM

I was just wondering what to do...
My room has purple walls that are starting to look just a bit too girlie for me. However, I don't have anything to make them look less girlie and I'm tired of feeling like a little princess when I walk in there. I don't have any posters or pictures, nor do I have money to go buy anything of the sort. But I'm starting to hate it in my room now because it doesn't reflect who I truly am...it reflects the girlie girl I used to be and I hate it. My mom wouldn't be too keen on re-painting my room and she would never allow me to do it myself. Besides, she wouldn't let me have my room painted anything cool such as blue or black...she would be sure to reserve it to girlie colors because she wants me to be a girlie girl. Please help. I hate it in my room now, but there are times when I HAVE to be there. Could you please give me some advice?

Hey Metal Lover,

Don't worry, there are plenty of room designs which utilizes the color purple which were not made for females in particular. The color purple doesn't have to be feminine unless you think it. I don't have much advice other than telling you to dispel the notion that purple is for girls. Purple can be a guy's color too.

You can try googling for purple room designs. I can find a lot of examples of masculine purple rooms.

Thanks, I'm thinking of putting little guyish-type decorations in there, such as skulls and other stuff like that. I also have a purple satin bed set with flowers on it that I'm going to trade in for something a lot less frilly and princess-y. I'm going to try and get the money to possibly buy a Metallica poster and take down that pink one with the kitten trying on a high-heeled shoe. *O_o" I'm going to take out everything resembling something a four-year-old girl pretending to be a princess would have in her room and either make it look less like such or replace it with something I actually think would look good. For example, I have a pair of bookends that are bright green with pink and purple flowers-I plan to cut out pictures from magazines and glue them over the flowers to make them look more like something I would like. So thanks ^_^ I'll try not to associate purple with girls but it wil be hard being as the sole reason I had my room painted purple was because I was a girlie girl at the time and I thought purple was the best color ever. But I'll try.

I know how exactly how you feel.
My room back home has the most hideous yellow floral wallpaper, and I've hated it my entire life.
What I did, when I was about 13 or 14, was print out a bunch of pictures I liked from the internet (bands, models, photographs, etc.) and literally covered two of the walls in my room with them.
My mom has a strict no tack policy, though, so they're all taped up and beginning to peel off the wall. So I suggest using something a little stronger than scotch-tape

Posters from magazines? Get a pinboard and pin up photos or things like ticket stubbs etc? Make it into your room again, just put things that are personal to you now, and it won't look as girly

Thanks, this is a good idea! I'll have to buy a pin board first though.

Purple and black is actually a great color combination IMO, it looks darkly feminine without being girly.

Some things I would suggest for your room are...
- those really lacy, flowery frames for pictures, but in BLACK. I think you could pull it off not looking girly if it's in black
- a black comforter
- zebra and animal print accents
- Gothic-esque/1900's pieces
- Magazines like AP usually have good ads and stuff, but AP might be a bit light for you if you're into metallica. FYE usually has music magazines that you can find great pictures from.

Hope some of this helped

Becca. :]

You could get a new bedspread, that always changes the look of a room. You could also get a rug. Maybe your mom would be OK with a black wallpaper border. You could tack up blankets with cool patterns, if you have any you don't use.

Like Eve said, getting a new bed sheet is an easy idea to change the look of your bedroom. A really cool way to make your bedroom look a lot different is to cut of interesting pictures from magazines and bluetak them to your wall in a creative way. That's a nice way to put your touch on the room, and it only costs a few quid in magazines, but that's not bad

A nice way to make your room feel a lot different is to move your furniture around, and get rid of old items that you don't like anymore, you could donate them to charity Purple isn't a bad colour for a room, and it's not too girly! My walls are white, but my bedsheet is purple, and it's not that girly and 'princessy'.

Just be creative and do some creative ideas that you'd like. There's nice cheap and easy ideas that you could do to enjoy your room a bit more, good luck!

Re: Help With My Room - September 26th 2010, 04:19 PM

Becca-Would black and a really light lavender-type purple mix well? Because my room isn't painted a dark purple (that would be really cool), it's a very light lavender with darker lavender trim. I'm not sure if black would really mix well with a color like that, but I could try. I think my parents have a black comforter that they don't use and I could maybe ask them if I could trade in my purple satin flower comforter for it? I'm not sure they will do that, but still. And also, about the picture frames, I've seen those type of frames before and I remember thinking of them as really pretty and neat-looking, however, I would have no pictures to put in them. :P Don't have a camera either, except for the one on my cellie (pet name I have for my cell phone *O_o" Weird, I know.) so that might not work. I also really love the idea for the zebra and animal print accents, but I don't know where I'll be able to find any of those. I'll be looking, but I don't know just how much luck I will have. I also love the idea for the gothic-esque/1900s idea, but once again, I don't know where I will be able to find that. I'll check out the magazines. Thanks.

Eve-I'll be trying to get a new bedspread, possibly in black (I really like black in case you didn't notice), but until I can do that I'll be stuck with the purple satin. I already have a green area rug that is non-girlie but I would really like to have a black one, so I'll be looking for one of those. As for the black wallpaper border, I'll have to ask. Same for tacking up blankets.

Tayla Jay-I was thinking about moving the furniture around, I was actually even coming up with a plan for where I would put what, but I don't think my mom will let me. She probably wouldn't help me out with it anyway, or she would put off helping me until about six or seven months only to decide not to help me at all. That's just her little way of telling me "no" I suppose. I'll get rid of old items I no longer want as long as my mom will let me. She likes making me hold on to things I don't want for some reason, or she'll guilt me into keeping them by saying something like "Well, I bet some poor kid without anything to play with would love to have that, and you just want to toss it?". That was what she said to me when I got too old to play with toys and was wanting to get rid of some of my old stuffed animals. So I don't know about that one, maybe I'll convince her to let me get rid of the stuff I don't want by donating it instead of just tossing it.

Black works with every color. You could do accents in the darker lavender color and white.

As far as finding stuff, I got my zebra sheet set for less than $10 when it was on clearance at Kohl's. I've found those frames at places like Marshall's for about $5. You don't necessarily have to put pictures in them, you could make collages or put pretty pieces of wallpaper/scrapbook paper. Finding stuff at thrift stores really works if you paint it up with spraypaint.

Hey thanks, I'll look for those then.
