Cultural/language differences on TH? - November 14th 2010, 03:50 PM

What differences of language/culture have you noticed on TH? There are users from a wide variety of countries, so I was just curious if anyone else had noticed anything in particular that would be interesting to share.

No bashing cultures or anything. I just thought it would be interesting to see the differences.

I'm from the United States, a very rural part at that... And I even notice some differences in the way people from other parts of the country speak.

For example, different words are used to describe the same thing. Like I say college... you say uni type deal. Know what I mean?

Feel free to share any differences that you've also noticed. This is a very interesting topic to me. Even if it's not really something that you've noticed on TH, but have actually gone to other countries. I'd love to hear about it.

My apologies if there is already a topic like this... Feel free to lead me in that direction if there is.

Cultural differences, yes. I have noticed it a lot especially in the Relationships and Dating subforum (Where I make a lot of my posts).

The way we (New Zealanders) approach, discuss and handle this topic is very different to the way others (Brits and Americans) do. At least, that is simply what I have noticed. It's too hard to tell on such a small scale, but I get the *feeling* some of the American cultures especially are a lot more liberal and diverse, compared to the very "traditional" culture of us farmers and rugged pioneers down here in New Zealand.

Regards,

All the Americans I've spoken to think that the British wear big dresses and top hats and drink tea and eat scones.

And they don't know that Wales is separate to England!

I remember saying "I just had faggots and peas" on chat and a few people thought I meant "faggots" in another way I meant a sort-of meat ball

I used to go for tutoring for maths, and we call them 'grinds' here and nobody ever knew what I was talking about.

People comment on my use of the word "wicked" a lot. It's quite commonly used down here in New England, so I don't tend to think much of it when I say something like, "That was wicked awesome!" But I guess it sounds funny to some people.

Another difference I've noticed is that every other English-speaking country aside from the US seems to say "maths" instead of "math." Down here, we'd say (taking Nicola's sentence as an example), "I used to go to tutoring for math." So it always seems odd to me when I see that extra S.

I have a lot of problems pronouncing words starting with the letter "v."
I've moved around for a bit and I've traveled a lot.
And I don't bother telling people what I'm eating, because they don't know how to pronounce it...and they don't understand, either.

I remember someone in the chat or somewhere mentioned something along the lines "I'm going to go have a fag" fag=cigarette that took me by surprise.

I noticed it in the thread about french kissing.
The amount of different words everyone uses is amazing, I'd seen words I'd never heard of haha!

Lol, did you read the euphamism thread?

I've mainly noticed that American users are a lot more pro-adoption, because (as far as I'm aware) there isn't the same support for teenage mothers in the US as in the UK. And over here, you go to college from 16-18, the university (which is pretty well the same as American college)

I know in the UK, I don't think they call school years "grades"

For example:
I am in the 9th grade, I am a freshman.

Also, they don't have cheerleaders as a regular thing.

We have grades 9-12. Grade 9= freshman, grade 10=sophomore, grade 11=junior, and grade 12= senior. However, where I go to school it is grades 10-12th that are in high school.

The biggest: British chips are American fries. (Haha) Actually, foods in America vs. foods in England have some big differences. It gets confusing!
The other major one: Uni vs. college vs. community college vs. trade schools, etc.

I always notice colour - because it should say color.
And uni - because I'd just say college.
