I used to play competitive amateur chess, and represented my country in international tournaments when I was younger. I've also recently thought about getting back into tournament play myself recently.
Out of curiousity, do you play for fun with friends or tournaments? As for openings, it all depends on the strengths of the player. I would say that it is best to be able to play d4 and e4 openings, so that you can adjust to different opponents. I'm not an expert in openings by any means, but statistically, I believe that the Sicilian Defense is best against e4 and the King's Indian Defense is best against d4. If you want to play something not too hard, then I would suggest the Petroff and French against e4, and the Slav against d4. Both are considered "draw-ish" openings, but I think it's a good thing if you're looking more to work on your middle-game strategy rather than worrying on opening variations. I used to play in a local chess club when I was younger, would really like to get back into it if I had anyone to play it with.

None of my friends play and I don't think my school has a chess club. Though if it does, I'll join it so they can whoop my ass.

I checked out this site, it's a good place to see the basics of openings and some different variations. It's interesting, just to see the themes of certain openings, and you can play against the computer to see different variations. I definitely recommend it if you want to learn more about different openings ![]() I'd also recommend making an account on www.chess.com. It's free and there's different tools out there to help you improve from tactics, puzzles, and of course finding people to play with. Have a Story to Share About Your Mental Health Experiences? Ages ago I used to. But nah I wouldn't say I'm really good at it, not anymore. I tend to make moves only thinking like one turn ahead, if thinking ahead at all. I'll move my queen to check the opponent's king and get killed by a pawn lol.
If you've got some spare time, read this:

I never knew about www.chessfriends.com.
At first glance, the interface does look better for playing chess, and watching other games live. In terms of learning tools to improve your game, www.chess.com is much better. Have a Story to Share About Your Mental Health Experiences? Check out the link below.

My name's Chess.
![]() I also enjoy playing the game. I don't play much - my town's too small to have a club or anything - and I'm not that good, but I do like it. Nothing in the world is the way it ought to be. It's harsh, and cruel. But that's why there's us - champions. Doesn't matter where we come from, what we've done or suffered, or even if we make a difference. We live as though the world is as it should be, to show it what it can be. |

I play sometimes with my friends. I usually just mirror their moves though because I have no idea how to play
