Japanese! - February 7th 2011, 07:19 PM

Anyone else learning/learned it?

I had a gap where I didn't learn anything as I was sooo busy and I forgot loads of the Hiragana
I can do the first 10-20 hiragana and hold down a basic conversation (Yes, no, maybe, greetings, talk about myself)

I love this language! Plus I'm visiting Kyoto and Osaka in August!!!

I thought about you for the rest of the day.
Catching my head turning to find you again.
I hated myself for it.

I keep on thinking I ought to, at least a little. Japan's one of the places I want to visit but haven't, so I'm pretty jealous of your planned trip there. It's just a matter of when I'd learn. I'm not great at sticking to things, and I don't really have time for lessons.

Re: Japanese! - February 8th 2011, 03:36 AM

I took Japanese in school for a while, because I've always wanted to learn how to speak it. Unfortunately, my teacher seemed to take an instant dislike to me and some of my best mates were in the class too, so it made concentration a little difficult. Then I left school and I don't think I'll be picking it up again. I'm not really one for languages.

"Once a little boy sent me a charming card with a little drawing on it. I loved it.
I sent him a card and I drew a picture of a Wild Thing on it. I wrote,
“Dear Jim: I loved your card.”
Then I got a letter back from his mother and she said, “Jim loved your card so much he ate it.”
That to me was one of the highest compliments I’ve ever received. He didn’t care that it was an original Maurice Sendak drawing or anything.
He saw it, he loved it, he ate it."

I know basic Japanese. Like I can have a basic conversation but that's about it.

I learnt some basic japanese when I planned a trip a couple of years ago. I've forgotten almost all of it now unfortunately, but I'd love to learn more and go back there. Btw, Kyoto is amazing. Make sure you go to the Nishiki-Koji street market - they've got some really cool food and stuff there (like BBQed squid on a stick and green tea ice cream)

I've been trying to learn this for years, I just can't find a decent way to... I had that Nintendo DS game, but my ds broke, so now I'm out of resources where I can actually physically practice

Re: Japanese! - February 12th 2011, 10:54 PM

I can only write about 10. It's MUCH easier to read. I have this app on my iPhone (iKana) and I just select the Hira/Katakana I want to learn, and then I select which the answer is. I just keep doing that over and over until I can recognise each symbol

Hah, I really can't read anything. xD I am, however, learning to speak the language (and I'd better get on that. We're hosting an exchange student next month!)
