Cool Sororities & Fraternities - April 23rd 2011, 05:08 AM

I know that this may be placed wrong, but I had no idea where to put this. It wouldn't bother me at all if you'd like to move this to a place that you feel it belongs.

.:.:.:.:.:.:.:.:.:.:.:.:.:.:.:.:.:.:.:.:.:.:.:.:.: .:.:.:.:.:.:.:.:.

So basically ever since I started looking into colleges during Freshman year of high school, I've loved sororities. The sisterhood, the secrets, the goals, and the philantrophies- they all amaze me. So, I was looking up sororities this evening and figured that I should create a thread for other Greek enthusiasts to chat in. Maybe you have a dream fraternity? Or are a legacy? Or maybe you've found a fraternity that's a hidden gem? Feel free to chat about it here!

I may not be homecoming queen,
The valedictorian,
The star of the scene.

But when this high school thing is done.
I'll be something better than anyone,
I'll be what no one else can be.
A shooting star for all to see.
That all along I've been becoming me.

Re: Sororities & Fraternities - April 25th 2011, 02:32 PM

I had a feeling this thread wasn't going to get many replies. Nothing against you, its just that I haven't really seen too many Greeks around here. I know there's a ZTA around here somewhere, but I think she's been pretty busy with her sorority, so I'm not sure if she's around too much anymore!

Anyway, I'm not Greek myself - in fact, I didn't rush freshmen year...its just not for me. BUT I have many friends in several different sororities on my campus: ADPi, ZTA, Phi Mu... my grandmother was the president of AOPi back in her day, and let's see... my big sister was a ZTA. As far as fraternities go, I have friends in Sigma Chi, Pi Kap.. uhhh, my cousin is a ... errr PIKE, I think. So, I've heard a good deal about the rush process and the "rushing" process they go through (which is really interesting...everything is much more calculated than it seems!).

I guess my best advice when you choose schools would be NOT to look at the Greek system first. You don't want to get influenced too much by it, but of course you want a Greek system that you can get involved in and that puts philanthropies first and all that kind of stuff, so definitely try to go into the rush process especially with an open mind.

Sooo yeah, "GDI" all the way, right here, but I'm sure we could have some interesting conversations on the Greek system, haha. Have you ever heard of "Total Frat Move?" I would link, but I never know what's going to come up there, so I don't want to run the risk. =P Its essentially all the hilarious stuff that lots of Greeks do...kind of like frat brothers making fun of themselves, in a way. Its pretty funny. And accurate. xD

There is another girl on here who is in a sorority (maybe it's the same chick), but she loves it! I go to a school where there is no greek life, and I love it just the same No matter where you do end up, I'm sure you'll enjoy your college life. And if you don't, you can always transfer.

I don't think I could personally handle the rushing and the parties and stuff, but the sense of community is probably fantastic!!

I really would like to be in a sorority. Eveything I've heard about them is so great..but I don't understand exactly how everything works.. Like, if you don't join your freshman year, is that it? And is there a chance you could rush and not get a sorority. What happens during rush?? Details! Details! Lol

Sororities interest me as well. If I could, I wish that I could go to a college with the Greek life. Apparently, I'm not in college yet x] But will be in a few months. I ended up picking a college with no Greek life :[
But I'm sure I'm going to enjoy it there all the same~

If you don't join your freshmen year, you can always rush as a sophomore or a junior. Sophomores/juniors actually have a better chance of getting in, because they don't count towards the "we can only take ## of freshmen girls this year," so you're not competing against all the other freshmen for those spots. And of course, most people like to expand their numbers each year.

There is a chance you could rush and not get a sorority. That would mean, during the rush process, that the sororities you pref'd didn't pref you (or vice versa...you might not've pref'd the ones that pref'd you), which would result in you getting dropped.

At my school, rush takes place over the course of three nights. Each night, you go to different parties at all of the houses, where you talk to a bunch of the different girls (this is the part where I was talking about it being very calculated... by the time you go in, they typically already know who you are because they've been having rush practice). Here, the morning after each of these nights, you pretty much rank the sororities on a computer system in order from least favorite to favorite. The sororities also rank you... if they think they may want you, you'll get a notice from your rush leader that you've been invited back to whatever houses. This happens again the second night. On the last night before bid day, you have "pref" night... which is where you choose your top 2 or 3 houses to go back and spend a bit more time with. If the 2 or 3 you chose want you, you go to their parties. If not, you get "dropped" from them. Hopefully, you match up with at least one of your three, or else you get dropped altogether. The fourth day, Bid Day, is the day in which all of the rushees sit together and wait for their envelope that contains their "bid" ... which is when they find out what sorority they're in. Then they go running across the quad to be with their "new sisters." (At my school, the Independents call this day "Squeal." We love to observe it. )

Anyway... as I mentioned before, I'm NOT Greek and NOT part of a sorority. This is just information I've picked up on from having friends who are, haha. Its different at each school, but hopefully this gives you a general idea.

I'm planning on applying to Duke, Carnegie Mellon, DePaul, and UC Berkeley.. I know Duke has great Greek life, I've just never looked into sororities much.. If you're in a sorority, can you get out? Also, do you have to live with your sorority sisters? Are there co ed sororities? Lol sorry for all the questions.. should I have put them on another thread?

Allo-

I'm in a sorority - it's fantastic. I just finished my first year of university and I rushed after first semester. I've met so many people through the Greek community. As soon as you accept your sorority bid, you immediately have a new family of fifty or so. It's incredible. The amount of dedication and support that Greeks have for their sororities/fraternities and their sisters/brothers is just inspiring and phenomenal to see.

If you have any specific questions, let me know.

Cheers.
