Angry Writers block!! - June 20th 2011, 10:45 AM

hellooo!
I used to write poetry and stories and stuff all the time, and it came quite easily to me. For some reason though I'm always able to write best when I'm feeling sad or depressed, I guess because my emotions are on the surface or something!! Anyway, now that I'm a lot happier and coping with life better, I'm finding it really hard to write!! Like I'll have ideas but just can't seem to express them on paper Obviously I'm glad that I'm happy now, but I feel like I've lost my writing ability! Any tips for writers block??!

Hey there,

I get that, I guess I feel the same a lot of the time. Often you just need some sort of stimulus to start you off, like a line from something or just a thought. The way I've started getting ideas for poetry when I have this problem, is getting a friend of mine to give me a phrase and I make my own interpritation of it and write from it. It doesn't matter what it is, it's your writing. You could also look online for ideas, or ask a family or friend to give you a topic to write about and see where your imagination takes you.

Hope this helped!
Hollie.

I'd record myself. When an idea strikes you, but you don't know just how to get it down into a word processing application, pull out your phone and begin recording.

Hollie gives good suggestions, I'm going to suggest looking at photos as well. They can be abstract or concrete, describe it. Describe what the person was thinking when they made it, and hopefully that'll help you!

I agree with what the others say; use prompts to kick start your brain. Something somebody says, a quote from a movie, a photo, a sound, anything at all.

Also, write everywhere. Carry a notebook with you and record random phrases you think up, anything that could be put into your writing later. I've also found that if inspiration hits me while I'm out, it disappears as soon as I think of anything else, so type out things in your phone or something.

If all else fails, take a break. All writers get writers block. Try out a different style of writing, like prose or non fiction, or try another art form, like photography or drawing. Come back to your poetry at a later date.

Good luck with your writing. x

When I get it, I read. Check out fictionpress, and get ordering lots of books from your library. Also, have a movie day, and just search through quotes online. I'm going through writers block, too!
