45min programme for old people - November 7th 2011, 12:53 PM

So me and some 3-4 friends of mine are going to an old-age home and we've been asked to set up a 45 minutes programme for the old people over there.
We are thinking jokes and playing/singing old Bollywood songs.
What else can we do?

Man, I'm terrible at creativity. But maybe put on a funny skit! Look on line for entertainment ideas. Maybe you could choose an old song that they would know, and come up with a cute, simple dance for it. I bet they would love that. OR OR OR you can do a five minute scence/skit where you're all dressed up as old people. That'd be cute. This sounds like fun

But all the choirs in my head say, no oh oh

Well it totally depends. are they just old or have dementia?

If they have dementia. Don't make it emotional, their perception of things can be totally wrong and emotional things may cause problems.

Maybe trigger old memories of GOOD things, dress from their young days, props like vintage telephone and radios. Include a presentation on PP maybe, to include up to date things

I know it's only 45 mins but make them feel included, get hem involved. Prior to the thing ask the carers to ask them to bring their favorite photo or something and ask questions about it

Full of ideas PM me?

xx

maybe find some poems and read some poems out to them, maybe do a few slapstick comedy acts, talk about school, sometimes elderly people love to know about school ect, maybe take some nail polish with you and do their nails whilst talking to them, read them a chapter from a book, maybe if you play an instrument like the violin or the guitar ect take the instrument/instruments with you and play a song for them. maybe hold a music and movement type thing where you do something like put on some music and get them up and do a little dancing with them. Theres lots of things you can do, maybe ask them when you get there if theres anything they enjoy doing or talking about.

BROKE
the girl who seemed strong
CRUMBLED
the girl who always laughed
CRIED
the girl who never stopped trying finally
GAVE UP

' i can't do this anymore'

Read a monologue. Read it to a partner on stage.
I love using one of the many monologues in the 1950's film Cyrano De Bergerac, google it. You could probably find the whole movie on Youtube, and reenacting is is quite amusing. Whenver I need to come up with a monologue for an acting course and I'm strapped for ideas I just get on from there.

Monologues are normally a minute long, but can last up to ten minutes. If you all took turns reading 45 different minute long monologues, the time would go by quickly.

Such lovely ideas

You could also make the atmosphere a bit like a dance from the 1950 era? Bring things like feather boas and ask them to wear them, and the men to wear bow ties?

Play music they will recognise.
Posters of Maralyn Monroe? She's the only 1950's icon I can think of

Have fun, i'll keep posting

Re: 45min programme for old people - November 17th 2011, 12:03 PM

OKay, so this old-age home happens to have an event CAlendar which is full for NOvember. So we'll do it probably in December. They are used to having school kids prepare dances for them I think, I checked their site and there were some photos and all.
SO I am thinking of preparing the how with the theme "Reliving old memories"
And we are thinking an old Bollywood movie quiz. Followed by an old Bollywood songs karaoke! ONe of my friends has the Karaoke thingy for these songs. SO it'll be a proper karaoke with lyrics showing and all. And then a shory sharing wherein they all share some stories with us. I am thinking that we can arrange games that they played in their childhood like the one with marbles and all. (IF you could help me more with these ideas I am considering it would be very helpful cuz they are just raw at the moment. I don't know how to go about them).
Any more suggestions on this theme please?

P.S. We have to put up a show for them. Not just spend time individually. So talking to them comes later.
P.P.S. They won't know Marilyn Monroe and stuff :P I am in India. But I'll find Indian counterparts for things you tell.

Thanks a lot for your suggestions!
