I've never heard that one. No, it sounds pretty impossible to me. The steam is tiny little droplets of water that don't touch, it would be very, very difficult for electricity to travel between each droplet and get to you.

I agree with Chandler. Being shocked from steam touching a light bulb doesn't seem like a plausible occurrence.

Not true. That's also why bathrooms have the "fan/vent" to turn on. The worst it can do is cause some mold to grow from the moisture, which if you use the fan then it likely won't happen.
Also, I'm going to move this to General since it's not actually a bodily ailment

As said, I highly doubt it. I always close the window when I shower because it's cold out and I open it again afterwards, the only thing that happens is the window/mirror steams up cause of the shower and opening the window afterwards helps clear it up I imagine.

that would be really unlikely, there would have to be enough heat from the steam to damage the light bulb enough to shatter/break. and even then you probably wouldn't get zapped.

I don't think you can get electrocuted.
But what CAN happen is the moisture from the steam can cause mold buildup. And in my house, we have wallpaper, not paint, so it causes the wallpaper to get all wrinkly.

I agree with the others, it seems very unlikely. When I shower with the windows shut it makes the room steam up, though, which makes the bathroom go moldy and the walls get damp.

If you had open wiring or touched the metal part of the bulb ... then maybe. But both are unlikely. I always shower with windows closed when I'm home because London is freaking cold. At uni in Aus the windows are always open as it's hot

I thought it was to stop the pant peeling off the ceiling...pretty sure it's not an actual hazard to leave the windows closed!!

We only have a really small window in our bathroom so it wouldnt make much difference if it was open or closed. This is the first time I've heard this as well but lots of people dont have windows in their bathroom so I imagine it'd be not true or a very, very slim chance of it happening.

In the UK the building regulations state that you must have an air vent or a single window in a bathroom to allow proper ventilation. But that's only to stop moist air from causing damage to the health of the people living there and and to the building.
The electric shock thing is an old wives tale. |

Your father is literally blowing steam because that's nonsense. The only thing that will happen is moisture build-up, which can lead to possible mold growth or paint peeling. Even if there were exposed wires with the lights on while taking a shower and someone dumped some water on them, it will not electrocute you because it has to somehow connect to you. I suppose if you had live wires dangling in the shower with the lights on, then it may be a different story but I doubt anyone is dumb enough to do that.

Nothing to worry about, that won't happen. Although if you have windows I would keep them open when showering because when the water turns into steam and you inhale it, and the water is treated with chlorine.
I'm not saying your going to die or your going to get sick, just saying if you have a window why not open it. |

Yeah, like everyone else is saying, I'm pretty sure that won't happen. The moisture can cause mould to grow or sometimes cause the paint to peel, but it won't electrocute you

i dont know about that, but its best to turn on the fan. i dont know if its the same where you live, but here there are some things in the water that can accumulate in the room when you shower that arent the safest thing to breath every time you shower. otherwise no, hes pretty wrong on that, ive never heard of that happening xD

Dad has a steam shower in his bathroom. It's not air tight of course, but obviously it's supposed to have a lot of steam in there. All of the electricals are sealed according to the contractor. But we're sure that is to keep the steam/vapor/water out, not to keep the electricity in.

I doubt it, really. I refuse to shower with the window open. I don't care that our garden is surrounded by a huge wall covered in ivy, I'm not taking the chance that someone wanders into the garden and looks through the gap in the window. It's never caused any problems before apart from when I forget to open the window again afterwards and everything gets all steamy and wet.

no windows in my bathroom but the question is interesting. I would say the only bad thing you can do when taking a shower is not to rince its floor before going in it barefoot

Lol i've heard that a few times but it can't be true. I've never had a washroom with a window that opens and I almost always shower with the lights on unless its early in the morning and my eyes are taking too long to adjust XP
