My temper is getting shorter. - January 15th 2012, 10:46 AM

I am having trouble controlling my temper. Whether it is a game that I lose at, or biting my cheek my response is violent and loud. Even when I catch myself it is usually too late and it just makes me feel sick inside if I don't let it out.

I have always been emotionally shallow, I have become addicted to being with people who are full of emotion, it feels like I am experiencing it with them.

I am scared of where this is taking me. This is not a sudden thing, I have progressively been getting worse for a few years now. I need help, but I don't get a lot of access to "go out and talk to people" so I don't know what there is that can help me.

Any advice would be great, thanks for reading .

You should probably take a few breaths when you know you're going to get upset, have some calm music playing, count to 15 in your mind or test out a few remedies that may work for you.

Hey Joshua,

Counting to ten in your head when you feel really angry can help to calm you down in the moment. Visualising a situation where you feel calm or at ease can help you to calm down.

Also, removing yourself from a situation when things start to get to much can help.

I've found you a website page which goes into detail on different ways to deal with anger. They won't all be appropriate for your situation but hopefully if you read through it carefully you'll find some good techniques. http://www.apa.org/topics/anger/control.aspx

Been there, done that. I was also pretty violent and short-tempered a few months back. I used to throw a tantrum at the drop of a hat. But then I realized that anger isn't getting me anywhere. It's harmful for everyone. So now whenever I feel my temper rising, I just close my eyes, take a deep breath, and ask myself, "Why am I getting so frustrated? There HAS to be a better way to deal with the situation." And this certainly works for me. You can also try it, if you want. I suggest that you control your anger, before your anger controls you. All the best!
