Honors English? - April 29th 2009, 02:42 AM

So I'm about to enter highschool next year, and my teacher strongly recommends that I take Honors English, saying that it's probably more similar to what we've done this past year anyway. But there's a catch--she said it's going to be a lot of work. A LOT. And at my school, well, the teachers don't assign a lot of homework. So when I get into highschool, I'll be dealing with not only Geometry, my state's history, and physical science homework, but ALSO Honors English homework? I know that it's important to get good grades and take AP and Honors classes if you can handle them, especially since I'm going to need a scholarship if I ever want to get into college, but I just don't know if I can handle Honors English. I have hobbies, and projects outside of school that I like to work on, and it'll make me really sad to have to give them all up for school.

So first of all, do you think I should take the class anyway, and second, would you please compare regular Freshman English and Honors English? Thanks in advance, to whoever can offer advice to me. Your help would be much appreciated.

Hey Se-Se! [:

See, most of the time, your teachers will only recommend things when they think you can handle them. But if your teacher is "strongly recommending" this, it really means she thinks you're going to do okay with it. Talk to her about your concerns of not having enough time to focus on English in the midst of having hobbies and focusing on other classes and see what she thinks to that. Though she's only known you for the past year, you have spent a lot of time at school, so I'd say she does know you and your work ethic fairly well if she's paid any sort of attention whatsoever over the past year.

I've taken Honors/Pre-APs/APs since I was in eighth grade, and I definitely think it's helped me, personally, to write so much better than those who haven't taken it simply because we've been trained so precisely in how to write well. So, I dunno, the biggest part for me was the summer reading, and the work for the rest of the year was a downhill slope from there. To be honest, you just need to sit down [maybe also with your parents?] and think about what kind of effort you're going to be willing/able to put into this class. Good luck!

And it add on to what Katrina said;
My teachers told us in middle school that honors classes were extremely hard and that unless we were very good at the subject we shouldn't take them because of the intense work load. Truthfully, I've found them to be the easiest classes i've ever taken in my life. And speaking on a more general level, most times you don't have a lot of busy work like in regular CP classes, so the work load is less. It may be harder at times, but it's not completely pointless busy work. I think you should consider it. Personally, i've found all of my honors/AP classes to be a lot of fun and perfectly manageable.

Honors English can't be that hard. If you know how to read and write, then you really should be fine.

I highly recommend taking Honors English. You'll probably have to do a lot of reading and writing, but it'll also probably be more interesting than non-Honors English. If it's way too hard, you can always switch out of it.

trust me. you can't even tell the difference in whether or not the class is Honors or not.
either way, sometimes the teacher may choose to teach the same thing for both English honors and their "regular" English class.
I'm in English Honors 3 and all year Ive been passing with a High A or B
if you're good at English at all, you'll do fine.

Sometimes I can hardly tell if the class is Honors or not. For example, in my math class, we do the same things as the other math classes. We just have two projects to complete. I took Honors English for the past two years. The first year it was hard, but I managed. It's doable, trust me. My sophomore English Honors class was utter crap. We didn't even write a research paper. It honestly all depends on your teacher. I would talk to someone that you know who is older to see what things are like at your school.

I think you'll be able to handle Honors English. Honestly, I think as long as you have the dedication for it, most people can handle Honors English. Basically, honors add that extra bit. It might be an extra assignment or question on a test, but it is meant to push you so you can take advantage of your education.

I took honors English, honors history, honors Biology, and honors Geometry Freshmen year. I think you'll be okay.

Re: Honors English? - May 3rd 2009, 03:49 PM

The Honors English teacher recently visited my school to speak with all of the students who were interested. She basically just went over a list of simple expectations, told us just a little about the class, and took a sample of each student's writing. She, like my current teacher, said that it would be a lot of work. Now, I think she was only saying that to discourage students who aren't willing to put in the extra work.

So thank you, everyone, for giving me some more ideas of how it will be. Your thoughts and encouragement, as well as my parents' and my teacher's, have driven me to make my final decision. I am going to take Honors English, and thanks to you, my stress level has gone down quite a bit. So thanks again, guys.

That's awesome! I'm glad you got it worked out. As such, I'm going to close this thread. Take care, and I know you'll enjoy Honors English next year!
