Need advice regarding job experience - April 1st 2014, 06:56 PM

Hello,

When I was still in college I had to do a 1 month internship with a company. My duties were to create and maintain a clothing stores website. Now for that entire month I didn't do any work at all and didn't submit any work at the end of the month. Why? Well there's a couple reasons. I didn't understand the material (I am a really bad programmer) and I wasn't getting paid for it. That 1 month internship is still on my resume, should I take it off?

Well, that entirely depends.... If you have very little experience otherwise, I'd say no.... If you have a lot of other experience that would outshine it, then I'd say yes...

For the NO:
Ok, if you don't really have a lot of other experience that's relevant (ex. maybe you work at Tim Horton's and have your degree, idk)... then you might want to keep it. If nothing else you can use it as an example of "I thought that this kind of job would be right for me but I have since realized my interests are elsewhere and have refocused on....."

But on the other hand, even if you don't have a lot of other experience, if you know you can't bring yourself to say anything food about it, take it off, there's no point in high lighting something that makes you look bad - I took off a fast food job because I was so so sick of being asked about it in every single job interview when I new I hated the job and didn't want to talk about it I wanted to talk about X, Y and Z which were skipped over in favour of harassing my about my fast food job.... So off it went... It caused me undue stress to have to worry about answering to this job in interviews, so even though it was only 2 years off I was like, you know, this doesn't represent who I am, it's gotta go.... So if you are having thoughts like that take it off

For YES:
Refer to the above, which also ties into if you have a lot of stuff that you'd rather talk about why bther focusing on it right...

Definitely take it off. This shouldn't even be a question.

When writing a proper resume, each work experience shouldn't merely be your title and the company for which you worked. I'd suggest at least two bullet points outlining your roles, responsibilities, and the impact that you had on the organization. The best resumes are those full of results-oriented statements.

It's much better to have less work experience that can illustrate that you make an impact on the organizations for which you work, compared to having a laundry list of things that you did for a month in college.

I have a lot of knowledge and experience with resume-writing, so let me know if you have any additional questions.

I agree that you should take it off.

If you got an interview they may ask you questions about the internship and what it was you did whilst there. If you didn't do anything then they're going to catch you out and may think that you've lied about other things in your resumé too.
