Screwed up an exam - April 28th 2014, 08:38 PM

Hi. I gave an entrance exam for engineering a few weeks ago. For a student from the science background, it is considered THE Holy Grail to get through it. I have never been interested in being an engineer; I want to take up Economics or Law or Journalism in college. I gave the exam anyway because my father wanted me to.

I have always been a good student with A/A* grades. I have always been a regular in debates, extempores and speeches at school and other events. Everyon thinks of me as 'all-that' but I have always thought of myself as a fraud because I have never felt intelligent. I just always thought luck was on my side.

Well, I bombed the engineering exam. I am getting marks in negative, for god's sake. I knew I wouldn't do well but I didn't expect I'd do so badly. I haven't ever failed in any exam before so I really feel that this is the end of the road for me. I can't talk to my parents about this but the result goes public in three days. I am freaking out here. I don't wanna be labelled as 'the girl who didn't make it.'

The stupidest thing is that I never wanted to take the bloody exam in the first place because I KNEW this would happen.

Being good in studies and intelligence are two different thing..
when you don't want to do engineering then it doesnt matter whether you cleared the exam or not.
Do what you like to do rather then following other's order and failing is not such a bad thing; thousand of people fail everyday it is not the end of the road..but i get your point you care about reputation isn't so?

Yeah, exactly. I don't think you need to be very intelligent to get good marks and vice versa, I don't think marks are a very good indicator of intelligence.

Caring about my reputation as someone who's 'all that' has always been a problem for me. But I'm TRYING to get over it.

I have made it clear to my parents that I won't be pursuing Engg. So things are better now.

Thanks

I am sorry to hear that you failed the entrance exam.
Yes, education is not for everyone and I agree, it does not measure intelligence in all areas however, I'd like to make some points.
This is not the end of everything, You do not have to be an engineer. It is up to you what you study in school and you can make that clear to your parents by going to school and taking classes you are interested in.
It is difficult for some parents to accept that their children or child does not want to study what they want but ultimately you will do well in what you find interesting and view as something you can make a career out of.
You want to study something that you know you will enjoy or that you find interesting and know you can get a career out of and excel in.
This does not mean perfect A's or B's however (as I am learning through my college study). You do not have to have perfect marks but studying what you want will definitely improve how well you do.
A lot of time and money is invested in education; spend that for you and no one else's goals/ambitions for you.
It sounds harsh to your parents probably, I do not mean to be, however overtime you realize and they will that they cannot and should not control major decision such as this in your life. You and them will not agree on everything but they will like seeing you happy and doing something you are passionate about.
I hope this helps and you can send me a PM or VM if you would like to chat.
