Basic English Skills Help, Please! - October 17th 2014, 04:18 PM

Hello,

I know I don't post in this section very offen at all, but I'm needing help with Basic English Skills homework. We are learning about complex sentences and clauses. If I post some of my homework, can someone please help me figure out the correct answer? I'll post what I think is the answer of course.

Okay, the first question is as follows.
1. the complete subject and complete predicate are seperated by a slash mark. Select the correct one.
A. The books on the shelf/are quite old and fragile.
B. the books/on the shelf are quite old and fragile.
I think it's A because it's telling you which books the sentence is talking about, but I'm not 100% sure.

I believe A is correct since the complete subject consists of what the subject is entirely- in this case itís talking about the books on the shelf and not just any books.

The sentences 2 through 5 have the same instructions.
A. Maria carefully mesured the space/ for the shelf and sawled the plywood.
B. Maria/carefully mesured the space for the shelf and then sawled the plywood.

Once again, I think it's A, because it's telling us what Maria is doing.

3. A. The Electrician/was both quick and careful.
B. The Electrician was/both quick and careful.

This time, I think it's B. It's telling us how the Electrician was.

Yes, I believe it is also B, because it is saying how he was, but also because A is only the simple subject

4. A. The orderly on night duty/wares a headband and an apache necklace.
B. The orderly/on night duty wares a headband and an apache necklace.

I think it's A, because it's telling us which Orderly wares the headbend and apache necklace.

B. Sharon /keeps a flashlight and candles on hand for use during power failures.

Thanks, now questions 6 through 10, I have to select the correctly identifide compound subjects, verbs, or objects in the following simple sentences.
6. Scrooge, Tiny Tim, and oliver twist are some of charles dickens characters.

A. Scrooge, Tiny Tim, and oliver twist (compound subject)

B. scrooge, Tiny Tim, and oliver twist (compound verb)

I say it's A, because they are all names of characters.

okay, number 8.
Don wrote, read, and rewrote the letter to Marsha.

A. Don wrote, read, and rewrote (compound verb)
B wrote, read, and rewrote (compound verb)

I think it's B, because these are all verbs and they are compounded by the word And.

For 11 through 15, I have to identify the simple subject and verb combination for the fires part of the sentence, and identify the conjunction that connect the two parts of the sentence. Are you good at this? I'll try to do my best to give my answers, lol.

A. Height is important and in football
B height is and weight helps

This one, I'm not quite sure which one is the correct answer.

Are we trying to identify the simple subject, verb and conjunction?

What do you think is the focus of the sentence? Since the sentence uses a conjunction, there may be more than one focus. The verbs will be close to the subjects.

I would go with B as simple subjects (height and weight more specifically because those two are *doing* the verb .the word "and " would be the conjunction. "In football is more of an object because it received what the subject is doing. I hope that makes sense

12. Ted ran all the way, but he missed the bus anyway.
A. Ted, but, he missed the bus.
B. Ted ran, but he missed.

I say B, because Ted is the subject, and he Ran, the conjunction that connects the second part of the sentence is But, and He missed is what happened.

13. The president ordered the strikers back to work, but they would not return.
A. president ordered but they would return.
B. president but back to work.

I say it's A, because president is the subject, he ordered, the word but connects the second part of the sentence, they is the simple subject and would return is the verb.
