Cheating or no? - December 11th 2014, 05:03 AM

So I have two psych classes, one is easy, one is hard. I did a ten page paper for the hard one, got a B, and I have ten pages due for the easy one. For the easy class, however, the papers only worth 5%, but its enough to get me over the hump for a 4.0, if I do well on the exam. The professor literally has thousands of students. If I turn in my paper from the one class and get caught, could I be caught for cheating?

Its due tomorrow.

Yes. Most universities consider it cheating to reuse papers. If you are turning them in electronically, there is a chance that they could run them through something like turnitin which compares it to thousands of papers. Half the time it marks it too high but it's still a major risk.

The scary part is that you could be potentially dismissed from the university for cheating and not just fail the classes.

Maybe you can rehash it into a new paper by rewriting and including more material into it. It is less risky and you can say that you didn't realize you couldn't write on the same topic since it's due tomorrow.

Oh why couldnt you say it sooner. But I did change some things, and I did send it electronically. Oh God...

Wait, I sent it to his personal email, and I sent the previous one using D2L. Safe?

Oh no, I'm freaking out... this cant end well...

I am fucked! It even says in the syllabus I can't do it! Should I tell the professor beforehand??

Looks like I might have solved my problem. I sent him another paper, and told him to discard my last e-mail. I hope that saves me from any potential problems.

You wrote a new ten-page paper in half an hour? Damn!

That's also considered plagarism, but I think that's only if you lent the paper for the hard course to a friend or sibling and had them "copy" it. Because when you do it yourself, that's cheating. Cheating is when you don't do any real work.

Hopefully your professor ignores the original email and focus on the second. What I've learnt, to grab a person attention, is write something like "URGENT!" or "READ ASAP!" in the email title, that way, they go to it first.

Next time, work on it a bit harder. Ten pages is wicked long, but is it really worth risk getting expelled just for a 4.0 GPA? I'd rather get the 3.8 (or whatever) by working on it.

If he questions it you could just say you accidentally sent the wrong file or something and send him the new one, especially since you didn't originally know you were doing wrong

Take as long as you need.

If they are using his personal email address as a way to accept papers, then he probably isn't scanning it through cheating software. I don't know about D2L since all the Ohio Universities and even my Ohio high school used turnitin. Turnitin usually marked my papers 20% due to the cover page, the citations, and the in page citations so the standards were off.

If D2L is just a classroom shell, you are probably fine. We used Blackboard for our shells at my colleges and they had turnitin built into the shell.

Anyway, you could say that you sent in a rough draft or the paper from the other class by accident if asked.

Ugh... classic Ohio...
Well, I already avoided any potential problems. My school actually was, at least at some point, using a trial version of turnitin. Not sure if they still do, but I dont know. But it says directly in the syllabus I can't do this. I do feel better knowing the 3.0 I'll get is exactly the grade I deserve, cuz I hardly ever go to class.

I'm glad that you managed this situation. To be totally prepared is always the best choice. Though, if you have no time it's hard to do everything. As for me, I don't have as much time as I need to complete all my assignments by myself.
