shop manners - February 22nd 2015, 02:47 PM

hey so i now work in this music shop but i don't really know how to talk to customers on the phone or in person. talking to friends is different to strangers/customers because you already them and stuff. but strangers? i don't really know how to do it. i don't even talk to my friends much, let alone other people. can anyone give some general phrases that are good for talking to customers? i'm scared they'll fire me because i can't talk to people, as it happened before when i worked in a cafe a few years ago :/

thanks

Well, you can talk about the products:

"Nice choice, have you ever had a Les Paul?"
"I recommend the Taylor instead."
"So what kind of things are you looking for in a guitar?'

Make observations:

"Awesome shirt, how long have you been a fan of the Foo Fighters?" and then you can go further: "Hey, have you had a look at some of the Fooies albums we have here?"

Recommend advancements to the products they have already bought. "That is a real nice set of drum heads there. If you ever need some spare sticks or cymbal stands, they're just at the back there."

And then follow up. "I saw you here a couple of days ago, how did it go?"

Again, make it all about the customer and always wear honesty. If the customer realises you're not trying to pull lines out of a consumer service handbook and you're actually talking to them, everything becomes easier.
