Question Do i need to decide now? - March 17th 2015, 11:11 PM

I'm a sophomore, and my mom is constantly pressuring me saying that I need to decide what i want to go for in college. She says by the end of this school year (9 weeks) i HAVE to have narrowed down 3. I've tried telling her that I'm trying (I really am) but she won't listen. Anybody know any ways to get her to see my side? Or make my decision easier? Or anything?

Hey Taylor, welcome to TH: College planning can be stressful, but you DO NOT need to decide your sophomore year of high school WHAT you want to study in college. But you should have an idea of WHERE you want to go and be narrowing them down so you can apply by December of your senior year. Generally, you'll have to declare a major by your sophomore year of college, but you don't really want to wait that long. Knowing what you want to study can narrow down your choices of where to go, or vise versa. If you really can't decide, you could always double major or do a major and a minor. It will also help if you have an idea of what you want to do career-wise so you get a degree(s) that allow you to do what you want.

You definitely do not need to know what you want to do in college. Like Kate said, it's a good idea to have an idea of where you want to go by the end of your sophomore year, like a general idea of what you're looking for. But you definitely don't have to decide anything until at least your freshman year of college. Besides, at most places, you have to get your gen ed out of the way during the first year and you won't even get into your major classes anyway.

Sorry I couldn't be there, I was tied to a rocking chair.

Unless you plan to go to university outside of the USA then you do not need to know so soon in high school. You actually need to declare a major in sophomore year of COLLEGE. So that's 4 years from now. That's how it is in my school in order to get financial aid continued.
