Unhappy Leaving sixthform? - September 7th 2015, 08:49 AM

Hey everyone, I recently started sixthform but after a few days already I've already found that it's not for me and would much prefer doing an apprenticeship that's more hands on and productive.

Is there anyway I can leave the sixthform? And do an apprenticeship instead of even have a full time job?

I really don't think I can manage the stress of sixthform and the work controlling my life.

Any help?

Thanks 🙋

Hey there,

Since it's only been a few days that you have started 6th form, most schools do allow you the first two weeks as a period of deciding whether to change your options or not. I think it's definitely possible to leave 6th form at this stage. Perhaps you could talk to a careers teacher or head of year, and let them know that you want to leave and do an apprenticeship instead? They may also be able to help you find or get into an apprenticeship too.

They may, however, recommend that you carry on with 6th form for another week, before making a decision, just so you know you are sure about what you want to do.

Take care

Hi there,

I don't think you can be forced to stay in sixth form no matter how long you have been there. I know I was in for a year and then dropped out and went to college instead but then hated that so ended up begging my sixth form to let me back in and luckily they did! But no one can make you go so if you feel it's best for you to drop out and do something else then I say go for it! You only have one life and you need to do what makes you happy Talk to your sixth form lead about it!

Yes, definitely speak to someone about it. Don't just stop going in like I did, as you can end up feeling a bit stranded and unsure of who to turn to.

An apprenticeship is a great idea, in my opinion. You learn as you work, which means you can instantly put concepts into practice.

Your sixth form might be able to offer you advice on apprenticeships and may have details of available ones.

If not, your local Jobcentre Plus can help you to find an apprenticeship, but you can begin by searching this website: Apprenticeship Vacancies (click)

One thing you might want to check out before you do anything is if you'll be able to get an apprenticeship. I don't know how common they are where you live, but I know a lot of companies avoid them here because, yeah, it's great to have an entry level person slumming around to do a lot of the "easier" stuff while they learn the ropes of the field, thus freeing up the more experienced people BUT the major draw back is that it requires a lot of resources on the clock as well as financially to train a person, so some companies don't want to. This means that it makes apprenticeships harder to get. So I'd make sure you are able to line one up before you quit school

Hey Callum,

I'm sorry you're not enjoying sixth form at the moment. Have you spoken to anyone about the way you're feeling? Maybe you could approach your head of year or head of key stage if you have one to discuss your options. I left sixth form early and started college the following year, so you need to think about the possibility of maybe having to have a little time out of school between this, what would you do until next September if you're not able to start an apprenticeship in the mean time? A lot of apprenticeships you go to college for one day a week, so you would still have work to do.

I know the law changed in the UK in regards to the age that young people stay in education, so there may be a possibility that you can't leave sixth form so looking into that could be really helpful.

As someone who did leave sixth form early I would suggest thinking really hard about it, it is a big decision and not one you can go back on. So make sure you speak to everyone and get all of your options before you decide what is right for you.

I wish you the best of luck and I'm always here if you need someone to talk to.
