transferring- Check this idea? - September 30th 2015, 09:22 PM

So I'm trying really hard to get into a... certain university, and I've already sent in my application. Even though I worked my ass off and tried my absolute hardest to make my application into a masterpiece, I still feel like I won't make it. It's an elite university, and even though I have good grades (3.67), I've literally had my dreams crushed so many times in my life that my hopes aren't too high.
Anyway, I had an idea: I wanted to email the football coach at this university. He's known for going out of his way to help people, and he's extremely famous and influential at the university and outside. Honestly, and this is an exaggeration, but getting a recommendation from him would barely be a step down from getting a recommendation from the Pope. And I know I could speak his language, I know a ton about him, he's my hero. So what do you guys think?

Unless you know him personally or plan to play football there, I wouldn't ask him for any favors; especially if you aren't sure you got in.

This coach doesn't know you personally, so he cannot speak to your accomplishments, interests, passions, etc. You also need to remember that you're not trying to impress the school, you're trying to impress the department in which you're applying. Unless you're trying to get on the team, his reference would be fairly irrelevant unless he knew you very well.

As a whole, you're going to want to stick to professors for letters of recommendation as a transfer and not a first year. Advisors, supervisors, etc, should be used as backup or only if they know you really well. When I applied to, uh, the same school , I used two professors I had done research with and my work supervisor who I had worked with for four years on projects directly related to my field.

If anything, you should start kissing up to professors at the university in the department. Maybe reach out and ask them about their work and that "once I transfer next year, I'd love to work with you on xyz project." At least for graduate school, the professors look at the applications. If they'd seen your name before on a polite email where you went back and forth about content and research, they may be more likely to think highly of your recommendation. Just keep in mind this isn't guaranteed, especially since undergrads have a much less direct relationship with faculty.

Harbaugh? Just turn on sports center. 24 hours, you're bound to hear his name.
